Of those, almost 600,000 will die from the

disease (National Cancer Institute). It is unknown what causes cancer, specifically, but research

is being done to help understand what causes cancer, how it can be prevented and treated, and

helps develop new methods in detecting cancer early. This important research needs to be

funded and money often comes from both public and private sectors. As a result, cancer

Cancer is a disease where cells become abnormal and grow uncontrollably. Cancer can

form anywhere in the body. Cancer cells form in one place causing a tumor which destroy

normal body cells. When a tumor forms, the tumor is considered either malignant or benign. A

malignant tumor is cancerous and a benign tumor is considered a lump of tissue that is not

cancerous.

is considered the onset of the disease and progresses to stage 2 and so forth. Stage 4 is

considered a very serious stage that is an advanced stage where the cancer spreads widely and

often leads to death.

Treatments for cancer vary depending on the type of cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy and

radiation are the most usual types of treatments. Sometimes the stage of cancer depends on what

type of treatment is used and sometimes more than one treatment is given at a time. For men,

prostate cancer, colon-rectal, and melanoma are the top three cancers. For women, breast,

uterine and colon-rectum cancer are the top three cancers. In 2016, breast, lung and bronchial

and prostate are the three most common overall.

Awareness leads to overall health and understanding of the disease. People who receive

information about cancer can know how to reduce their risk factors for getting cancer. For

example, because of awareness it is well known that smoking increases the risk of getting
