3 October 2016 Cancer Cancer is a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in parts of the body. Cancer results from an abnormal growth of malignant cells. We also have genes in our body which control how all cells work. Each gene has a certain job or task. If one gene has abnormalities or does not function properly, all of the other genes are changed. This creates an abnormal protein. Abnormal proteins sendoff different signals throughout the body which can cause the cells to multiply and cause cancer. Unfortunately, cancer is a massive issue in the modern world today. Scientists have been working for years on a cure for all forms of cancer with no luck. Some doctors and …show more content…
Researchers and scientists have studied ancient Egyptian mummies and have found no evidence of cancer. They have found that it is not caused by genes, but the modern world.” (Stevenson) Since there was no indication of cancer in the mummies, Stevenson believes cancer would not be considered genetic, but caused by the modern world today and the way people are living. Stevenson goes on to say that if mummies did have tumors and cancer was genetic, the tumors would have been preserved in the mummification process. David and Zimmerman are two additional scientists who have both done research on the preserved mummies. David states that cancer is man-made and it is something that we should pay more attention to. David and Zimmerman both go on to say that there is no evidence that says cancer is ancient. In other words, cancer could be passed down from a few layers of generations due to our modern day activities. However, they do believe cancer has not been passed down as far back as mummies. “In an ancient society lacking surgical intervention, evidence of cancer should remain in all cases. The virtual absence of malignancies in mummies must be interpreted as indicating their rarity in antiquity, indicating that cancer causing factors are limited to societies affected by modern industrialization.” (Zimmerman) He clearly believes many …show more content…
tend to have an increased body weight, lack physical activity, drug and alcohol usage, and poor nutrition according to the World Cancer Research Fund. Some people believe that cancer happens on its own and we cannot cause it or prevent it while others believe that avoiding smoking, drinking, stress, alcohol and other drugs can prevent cancer. Regardless, we should treat our bodies like a temple and keep ourselves as healthy as possible. While we don’t have a cure for cancer yet, we are very hopeful we will find one someday. Until we do, we need to be proactive and only funnel healthy foods and drinks into our bodies. Unfortunately, we cannot stop cancer or fully prevent it. We can, however, make our bodies as healthy as we can to avoid the risk of cancer and fight it should we be in that situation one
