In my hometown of Canastota, NY there are a few different environmental impacts that affect the community, some good and some bad. One major environmental pro for Canastota is the fact that it is what they call a “muck land.” Canastota is known for its production of onions and potatoes, in fact, its home to one of the top production companies in NYS. Not only was this a major source of food for our community at one point in time, but it was a major source of income as well. With access to things like the Erie Canal, the railroad, and later the NYS thruway Canastota was able to survive. It has become a tourism attraction for people who stop through (2015). I remember one year her basement flooded and all of her Christmas decorations got ruined. This is an issue because people like my grandmother cannot afford to buy flood insurance with good coverage. She was forced to remove everything from her basement out of fear that her belongings will get ruined again. This issue however isn’t just something she faces, some of the surrounding houses have foundation issues due to the rot from the water damage. Also tree branches often get stuck in the way of this creek, and debris begins to pile up, which ends up in my grandma’s basement. Because most of the wealthier people in our community live on the outskirts of town, it only affects those of us who can’t afford to fix it every time it down pores. As if this situation isn’t hard enough, the town officials haven’t done anything to fix the issue. In fact, they even told the people on my grandmother's street that this is affecting to pull the money together and pay for it themselves.
