Canadian Seal Hunt Research Paper

Each year, environmentalist groups campaign against the Canadian Seal Hunt despite the fact that this harvest is proven to be humane, environmentally sustainable, and a crucial part of many lives. The cameras show cruelty that does not reflect reality. In fact, this hunt is one of the most highly regulated in the world. Sealers kill using the swiftest methods developed. Over 90 percent use firearms and the rest use hakapiks. These weapons meet their mark instantly, and the animal dies suffering minimal pain. Contrary to activist claims, seals are dead as they bleed out, and what appears to be a struggle to escape is simply their swimming reflex kicking in after death, like a chicken running without its head. In 1991, the first recorded death of a person caused by an orca, Tilikum grabbed a trainer who fell into the whale’s tank and plunged her underwater multiple times.(Zajac, Palmeri, 2014) The most recent death occurred at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida on Feb. 24, 2010 when Tilikum pulled orca trainer Dawn Brancheau underwater where she drowned during a performance.(Zajac, Palmeri, 2014) The documentary tells the story of Tilikum from when he was young, having been captured from the wild, and kept in a pen in Victoria, BC at the now defunct Sealand of the Pacific. Eyewitness accounts from former employees explain how Tilikum was not accepted by his peers, and was bullied by the other whales during the night while they were kept in a tiny metal tank that provided little sensual stimulation.(Blackfish, 2013) Tilikum was scraped across the body by the teeth of the larger whales and suffered great physical and mental harm.(Blackfish, 2013)…

Canadian Seal Hunt The famous Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wangari Maathai once said “Environment and the economy are really both two sides of the same coin. If we cannot sustain our environment, we can not sustain ourselves” This has led me to the belief that the Canadian Seal hunt should not be banned because of the environmental benefits, economical benefits and the health benefits it provides that have been discovered through well developed research. Firstly, the seal hunt is balancing out the ecosystem. Research shows that seals in Newfoundland and Labrador are consuming 250, 000 MT of Turbot, 800, 000 MT of capelin and…

This has led to sever over population of seals from having a lack of predators and therefore a large decrease in their food source, the threatened species Atlantic cod. If unchecked the seals will continue to deplete the cod stocks causing them to run out of a sufficient food source causing the seals to die of starvation. This can lead to the marine ecosystem in this area to collapse. There is a common misconception that the seal hunt is inhumane because of some of the tools tradionally used in the hunt. In fact, the way that the seals are killed is actually very humane.…

The traditional seal fur trade should be discontinued in order to protect seal pups. If we eliminate seal pups to make clothes, then the whole ecosystem would be destroyed. The main food source of seal pups is fish and if there were no seal pups, then fish, along with other smaller sea animals, would overpopulate. Are we willing to sacrifice our humanity and ecosystem for clothes?…

No, no way, the Canadian government shouldn't ban the seal hunt due to many reasons. I feel the main reasons are: we would lose resources that we acquire from the seals, due to the increase in population of the seals, fishes that we eat are decreasing in population some are even close to extinct, and that the media is going above and beyond by showing nonsense and causing people to act against the seal hunt which is hurting the economy, specially the fishermans. First of all the seals are killed in a humane manner. The seal fishery is highly regulated and is being closely monitored to assure that the seal hunt is conducted in a proper manner, not torturing the seals. It is no less or more humane than the way other animals that supply us…

The ringed seal is a key sentinel species for mercury (Hg) contamination in Arctic marine ecosystems. The total mercury concentrations in Arctic ringed seals’ muscle were determined using a cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (CVAFS) instrument. The total mercury concentrations in high ice cover years (2003, 2004 and 2005) were significantly higher than the low ice cover years (2011 and 2012). This suggests that the change in ice-cover significantly changes the total mercury concentrations in the Arctic Ocean due to loss of methylmercury (MeHg) through photodemethylation. The mercury concentrations were increased with age in male ringed seals whereas there is no such trend in female.…

Harrison, Cameron Professor Rios English 1 1 December 2017 Research Essay: Trophy Hunting Imagine you’re in your front yard and all of a sudden someone with a large gun walks up and shoots you, then takes your head and mount it over their fireplace to advertise for all their guests to see. People actually do that to animals just for fun and because they can. Trophy Hunting is “a legal form of wildlife hunting in which ‘sportsmen’ pay large sums of money for the right to kill animals and take home a trophy” (Dymoke). Trophy Hunting should be banned because and animals are becoming extinct, people are killing for pleasure not food, and it does not help conservations efforts.…

In Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s film, Blackfish (2013), Cowperthwaite captures the psychological torture killer whales, specifically Tilikum and Kasatka, face at Sea World after being brutally separated from their families. The film takes us through the journey of captured killer whales becoming mentally unstable and being used for entertainment purposes. This film displays archival footage and interviews with former trainers who had close experiences with killer whales at Sea World. The attacks at Sea World stem from the whales’ separation from their families, the trainer’s demand for the whales to do tricks in solitary confinement, and the punishment done to the whales when their tricks are not properly executed. All major accounts of killer whale attacks on trainers develop through the distress of the whales outside of their natural habitat.…

Whaling has been a controversial activity for some years now. Whales in today’s society have been regarded as “gentle giants” and highly intelligent animals, which is true. Some nations however, such as the Norwegian and Japanese have whaling deeply rooted in their culture and history. For many centuries, their ancestors took part in whaling as a means to sustain their life, livelihood and culture. I agree with the Norwegian and Japanese position on permitting the hunting of non-endangered species of whales as a cultural exemption, given that the hunting of the whales is regulated to prevent over-hunting so that the whale population can replenish.…
