Standing Up Who knew you could stand up for what you believe in by sitting down? Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was doing exactly that when he sat down during the playing of the national anthem before a pro-football game; I agree and approve of what he did. He was protesting the different treatment of colored people and also the cops. After reading the article, ¨In the `Land of the Free,` Are You Free to Sit Out the National Anthem?¨ by Jaweed Kaleem, I learned that Colin Kaepernick is not the only one taking a stand.…
The Constitution Act of 1982 transferred the authority to amend the Constitution from Great Britain to Canada. To date, Quebec’s constitutional concerns have not been addressed to a great enough extent, according to the government or the residence, to formally pass consent on the 1982 Constitution. This is largely due to the distinctiveness of the society of Quebec originating from the largely French speaking population, the resilient cultural identity, as well as history, political, and social traditions, that are more or less not shared with the rest of Canada The question in concern is whether or not Canada’s Constitution should recognize the francophone population in Quebec as a ‘nation’ with characteristics and needs palpably different from those of other provinces in the Canadian federation. The problem has been tackled on a number of occasions but has yet to be resolved.…
Pierre Trudeau 's attempts to create a sort of "National Identity" during his first term, from 1968 to 1972, has resulted in much debate and controversy. Each of these works looks at Pierre Trudeau from a different historiographical viewpoint. The reason for this is because Trudeau, and his "nationalist" policies, affected every aspect of Canadian citizens’ lives. This was due to the fact that Trudeau was essentially trying, in creating these policies, to answer the question that the Canadian intellectuals were struggling since World War II 's conclusion. This question was: "If [Canadians] are not British [due to the rapid decline of the British Empire] and not American [due to Canadians ' long held distrust of American power and influence]…
The preamble to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom states, “Canada is grounded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God” (Russell 1999). According to Russell (1999), this can also be considered the “God-clause.” The three articles discuss this notion of stating “the supremacy of God” in the preamble of the Canadian Charter. Although the articles have different views about the preamble, I highly agree with Russell’s (1999) article titled, “The Supremacy of God does not belong in the Constitution”. To begin with, Russell’s (1999) overall argument is that ‘God’ should not be mentioned in the preamble of the Canadian Charter.…
The Impact of The Multiculturalism Act on Canada Canada is a well-developed country and if it was not for the certain rules or laws, it would not be the successful nation is it today. The Multiculturalism Act is the most significant development in Canada’s history towards creating a unified nation, where all are equal. Canada has gained victory in its evolution as a country because men and women are provided with equal rights and share the same freedoms, cultural heritages are celebrated, and two official languages are used to help the citizens of the country. The Multiculturalism Act has contributed to the success of Canada and the way Canada is portrayed as a well-developed nation. The Multiculturalism…
What it Means to be Canadian To be Canadian means more than simply living in Canada. In Canada we stand up for what we believe in and respect others opinions. The Role of Prime Minster of Canada and the President of the United States Many people think that President of the United States has more power than Prime Minster of Canada. However, when we look at the constitution of both countries, we can see that Prime Minister of Canada has more power in his or her country than President of United States does. When we want to compare and differentiate the power of both Prime Minster of Canada and President of United States, we need to look at their system of Government, roles of both Prime Minster of Canada and President of United States on legislative power, party discipline, appointive power, influence, and military power, and ability to implement their agenda. If we want to know more about the powers and role of Prime Minster of Canada and President of United States, we have to first look at their system of Government.…

Explain how you see the Canadian identity. Although there are many interpretations of what one sees as a Canadian identity. I see Canada as a ‘cultural mosaic’; a multicultural country where different cultures and identities coexist peacefully. In other countries, assimilation is integrated as part of the immigration process, and even require the immigrant ‘to fit in’ with the culture.…
Many Canadian citizens pride themselves on the multiculturalism, diversity, and equality their country thrives on. Since 1980, citizens as young as kindergarteners have been taught to sing of Canada’s home and native land in the national anthem, promoting the freedom and strength of their sovereign country. But, there is a lack of celebration for Indigenous peoples, and their distinct role in creating Canada. There is little recognition that the brutal colonization of Indigenous peoples, dispossession of their vast amounts of native land, and rationalization of racism in order to assimilate them into acceptable cultural norms, greatly influenced Canadians ability to proudly sing about the glory of their country. If there is no room in our national…
The English Canadians did not believe the French Canadians were providing a fair share to the war effort. The French Canadians believed they owed no loyalty to Britain or France so they were against the conscription. This lead to raised cost of living and created social unrest, ultimately destroying the very essence of national unity between the French and English Canadians. The English Canadians were close with and in support of the British Empire so they were for the conscription, as they wanted to help. The conscription allowed Canada to defend Great Britain as they had wanted, but it severed any ties between the French and English Canadians leading to war within Canada.…
Learning to Love America The journey and emotions that an immigrant must endure is something that no one can know unless you have experienced it. It may bring up feelings of joy, remorse, belonging, or isolation depending on the individuals experience. In Shirley Geok-Lin Lim’s poem “Learning to Love America,” she digs into these emotions of immigrating to a new country and the expectations that come with it.…
When first considering what politics meant to me personally, I started by looking at definitions of the term. A definition that can be applied to the term politics is the academic study of the government and the state. I feel as though this specific definition closely exemplifies what politics means to me because all of my experiences with politics have all been associated with my recent study of political science here at Lakehead. Based on this definition, the meaning of politics relates to the study of government, how government functions and the effects that it has on the state. This is due to the fact that the only experiences I have in politics have been through the various political science courses I have taken over this past year and…
The music of the younger generation always seems to strike fear into the hearts of the older generation. One only has to think of the beginnings of Rock and Roll and how the older crowd predicted youthful promiscuity, violence and anarchy. It’s easy to see why the idea of censoring music came about and how that idea still plays out in the music of today’s youth. One only has to listen to certain songs on the radio today to find that the “bleep” of censorship is still in fashion. Oddly enough however, when one searches “songs about censorship” on the internet, one finds that there is far more information about songs that have been censored than there is about songs dealing with censorship.…
