Kevin, Thank you, for the very insightful post. You made some great comparisons between the NHL and NFL when it comes to player safety. I am in agreement with you that it appears the NFL did not embrace Dr. Omalu’s findings at first and putting more football player’s lives at risk. We, as spectators, instinctively admire these hits, but rarely think about the long term effects that the players might face from such hits. This is largely due to the fact that spectators are blinded by coaches, officials, and players from the serious side effects and repercussions. Only recently has the public population found that there are more harsh and serious long term side effects from football than we have been led to believe.…

The steep rise in concussion diagnoses in the United States has prompted state legislation. Washington state's "Shake It Off Law," passed in 2009, was the first in the country to require medical clearance of youth athletes before they can return to the field for practice or a game after any indication of head trauma. The other 49 states have taken up similar laws, but cases are still on the rise. However, after sustaining so many concussions, the risks become more serious.…

This recommendation specifically aspires for the federal government to enforce more policies to allow aboriginals to be more involved in Canada’s sport systems. While sports would give the aboriginal population an opportunity to gain social connections and become more a part of their community, general physical activity, as discussed, has numerous benefits for health and well being. In a 2010 study, it is noted that obesity among Aboriginal peoples reached levels of 26%, while non-aboriginals only reach 16%.2 Elaborating on this, the study also notes that almost all diseases and disorders are at higher rates in Aboriginals than in their non-Aboriginal counterparts. This recommendation must be adopted, or even amended in order for aboriginals to receive the equality they deserve in sports.
