Canadian Culture: Field Journal Entry

Improved Essays
Hi, my name is Aliya and I’m going to be talking about the field journal entry that I’ve created for my collage. The collage I have created depicts Canadian culture based off of what I think it is. The first images I used, which are poutine, maple syrup, and Beavertails, are classic Canadian food staples. It seems basic, but I believe that they hold a deeper meaning than just being delicious food. To start off, food brings everyone closer. Food is a way people connect with each other and enjoy something together. Poutine, originating in Quebec in the 1950s, became extremely popular among Canadians. It became a symbol of pride for that province and their culture in Canada. Overall, this is a popular dish that represents a part of Canadian cuisine …show more content…
Beavertails are significant to Canada because their mascot symbolizes Canada, which is also why I included a photo of a beaver in my collage. The reason why beavers are so important to Canadian culture is because it was a symbol for the Hudson Bay Company, which was a fur trading business in the 1600s. Beavertails are warm, sugary treats that are topped off with different fruits and spreads that are sold all around Canada. It originates from Aboriginal culture, where they would cook the tails of beavers in a fire in the 19th century. As for maple syrup, it is something Canada is known for producing. Since we have many maple trees, we are the world’s number one maple producer. The leaf on Canada’s flag also represents how we have an abundance of maple trees, which further proves that maple syrup and other maple products are so important to Canada and its …show more content…
The reason why I chose these photos is because it shows how Canada and its culture are extremely diverse and accepting of people despite their origins. We as a country have evolved in a way that allows us to work together and form relationships without discriminating against each other, making us a polite, accepting, and open-minded country. Canada is very multicultural and diverse in terms of landscapes, people, and languages. I believe that the photo of the group of people with different ethnicities together is the most significant photo in my collage.

Another photo I chose is of people ice skating. I chose this photo because Canada has a variety of landscapes which allow people to come together and participate in a variety of activities during the winter time, which is another thing Canada is known for. The weather can get cold here and there's usually a lot of snow in certain regions, which makes it perfect for activities such as skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowmobiling, and ice skating. There are also different carnivals and fairs that are created by Canadians, which allow us to compete and have fun together while playing these

Since the recent rise in secularism, specifically within the social frameworks of Western culture, religious and spiritual practices have repeatedly been pushed aside and neglected. Although followers’ adherence to religion has seen a significant decline (Altemeyer, 2014), the notions and practices usually attached to religion or spirituality remain relevant in contemporary culture. The relevance of these religious notions and practices are seen explicitly through examining mental health, observing…

In a fairly short duration Bharati Mukherjee has received a respectable attention from the critics around the world. She is described as a ‘voice’ of expatriate- immigrant sensibility.
