On Friday and Monday morning I attended the CCDM Conference in Milton where I learned about many different disasters from floods to wildfires, gave a presentation on blizzards and am getting ready to participate in the debate with disaster experts from all around the world. From this seminar, I have brought back a lot of knowledge and experience to help prepare us for the future of Canada’s natural disasters and what we can do.
During this conference I have attended many seminars and the three which stood out to me were floods, fires and volcanoes about how they form, their effects, where they occur in Canada and what the government is and should be doing. I want to stress the points that the government is not doing enough towards emergency preparedness, how when the governement did take the leadership to help out the results turned out useful, other countries such as Tokyo and United States are using evolving technology which is proving to be greatly efficient and the way government leadership is needed to create a powerful and practical policy. I want to emphasize the fact that the government is not doing enough towards emergency preparedness. Every seminar stated that the federal governement is not working as hard as they should towards their disaster from millions of dollars being spent for other services while only $1-3 million is being spent in the disaster budget to false promises like supposed disaster insurances being made but nothing following the statements. Secondly, whenever the government took leadership by spending money towards a disaster, it made major differences.Compared to the 19th century, the 20th-21st century had decreasing forest fires because the government decided to invest in prevention protocols like controlled fires, researches/studies and a proper emergency response. Other countries such as Tokyo and the United States have taken lots of measures to help warn the public before an incoming disaster. Some recommendations that I have for future meetings are governement leadership and investment and modernizing our technology to keep up with climate change. I have repeatedly stressed the importance of government leadership and investment because it is one of the most important parts of climate change mitigation actions actually taking place. If the government is supporting the cause and helping out then a lot of chnage will happen in the future, even if you can’t see it in the present. I also think that as climate change effects get severe day by day, our technology should modernize to keep up with it. While different problems are happening in the world, our technology is promptly developing to conquer it, such as heaters for warmth, telephones to communicate with people quickly, etc. In the same way, we should start researching and finding solutions by which we can adapt and overcome to climate change. I think these conferences are very important to educate the public, create life changing solutions and study whatever there is to know since our world and its extreme events are constantly changing and we need these policies and emergency responses to be ready.
