The Persian Gulf War was the first major international conflict after the Cold War. The Persian Gulf War started when Iraq decided to invade Kuwait. Iraq believed Kuwait should be a part of Iraq and also wanted control of Kuwait’s oil wealth. Iraq had complete control over Kuwait within 24 hours of invading it. The UN felt that Iraq’s invasion was not essential so the UN created an Anti-Iraq coalition. There were over thirty different countries in this coalition. First these countries prohibited trade with Iraq then sent troop to Saudi Arabia in case Iraq planned on attacking them. Then they tried to force Iraq to withdraw by bombing them. Their goals were to destroy Iraq’s ability to launch attacks, eliminating biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons, and disturb their ability to gather info and communicate with their forces. After many weeks of fighting Iraq decided to withdraw. In the cease-fire agreement Iraq agreed to pay for all damages and destroy their weapons. Although Iraq did not fulfill its agreement, they did not bother Kuwait again. Canada sent five hundred thirty personnel to Saudi Arabia and five hundred air personnel to fight in Kuwait.
