However, not all criminal cases are overseen and processed in the criminal justice system in the same way, shape, or form as the criminal justice system is composed of different parts, stages, and agents each with varying differences, functions and goals. One important agent that has continually been examined in terms of roles, functions, and effectiveness is the police. This agent can be viewed as an important entity in crime prevention, deterrence, and maintenance of order of criminal offenders within correctional institutions. However, policing of criminal offenders within correctional institutions has posed various challenges for police and correctional officers. This paper will strive to examine some of the challenges associated with policing criminal offenders within correctional institutions with focus on instances of mental health disorder and gang violence drawing upon sociological and criminological theories. There are many different types of correctional institutions that can house alleged proposed criminal offenders. Some forms of correctional institutions include but are not limited to: youth institutions, correctional institutions for men and women, drugs, and mental health. However, in some cases it can be difficult to discern and distinguish which type of correctional institutions would be best suitable and appropriate for a proposed criminal offender. Also, correctional institutions can be ranked or classified on different levels depending on the type of crime and environment of a specified correctional institutional facility. Correctional institutions can be ranked, determined, and classified based on different levels of risk such as for example, low, medium, and high risk. The level of security proposed and determined by each will vary according to the type of facility and type of offenders. The housing and incarceration of inmates in various correctional institutions and facilities has sparked much debate and controversy. There has been much debate surrounding how offenders within these facilities are policed and also whether or not needs and challenges of different offenders and correctional institutions are being met. Various sources and forms of inequality has proposed and accounted for challenges within correctional institutions. Some challenges in which correctional police officers have grappled with amongst incarcerated prison members include but not limited to: drug use and abuse, prison gang violence, overpopulation due to prison overcrowding, race, class, gender, socio-economic status, rise and instances of mental health, and environmental location.
