The Faith of a Canaanite woman is one of the healing stories in the book of Matthew. The purpose of these stories is to show the healing abilities of Jesus. The passage in Matthew 15:21-28 is about the Canaanite woman’s daughter that is possessed by demons. This story was a dialogue between Jesus and the Canaanite woman.
This story takes place in the region between Tyre and Sidon, which is in Gentile territory (Matthew 11:21). A Canaanite woman from that area petitioned for the help of Jesus to help her daughter get free of demons. This meeting was not a mistake; he was going there to meet this woman. She begged him to have mercy on her, and to help her demon-possessed daughter. Normally, people were not convinced that he was Jesus (The Messiah), but this Canaanite woman knew exactly who he was. She looked for him because she knew the miracles that he could perform. It was her faith that Jesus saw and that is why he was drawn to help her.
Jesus did heal the Canaanites woman’s daughter like he did the woman in Matthew 9:20-21), this healing was different than other healings that Jesus had done in the past. Jesus did not touch her to heal her, as he did when healed two blind men (Matthew 20:29-34). Jesus did not use spit to heal her as he did when he cured a deaf man (Mark 7:31-37).
In conclusion, it was her faith that Jesus saw that made him want to heal her. The author is trying to show us how faith works. Webster's New World College Dictionary defines faith as "unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence; unquestioning belief in God, religious tenets." When he entered the village, he did not have any intent on helping the demon possessed woman. He told her mother that he was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel (matt????) Jesus responds by saying that her faith (or trust) is enormous and informs her directly that the exorcism is fulfilled
