Three people we discussed in class are Aristotle, Vallor, and Munn. Vallor and Munn use Aristotle’s theory of friendship as a backbone to discuss and evaluate how our society today works with friendship and technology. It is easy to be impatient because if you don’t want to wait for someone to answer you, you can just exit out or say “we can talk next time”. We don’t have to wait around, because we can just talk whenever we feel like it. Also, it’s hard to be empathetic towards people over social media. You can only go as far as to comment how sorry you are, but you cannot be there to hold that person face-to-face.
Through time and practice we can gain virtues, but social media might make it “too easy” for us to do that. It takes hard work to gain a virtue, so if we are easily doing it and not actually trying, we might not be truly gaining that virtue. If we aren’t practicing them, are we really gaining them? As a very outgoing person, it’s hard for me to believe there could be a world someday that has little to no face-to-face communication with others. I believe to truly identify a real friendship, we have to look at the happiness within each individual’s relationships with others. Happiness is the ultimate virtue, which is necessary for the “good life” to thrive. We need to focus on that because, yes, the other virtues are important, but if we are happy through the way we communicate with others now, why should we worry about those “as much”? They come with friendship if it’s not based off of a social media platform. Friends can use those social media platforms, but it cannot be the only way the communicate.
