For many years, traffic due to road construction has been viewed as different. Driving to work or travelling from place to another with daily traffic due to road construction is becoming a challenge to all American people. The main task for highway engineers in winter is keeping the roads clear and safe from snow. Engineers are obliged to choose construction materials that are environment friendly and ecofriendly. For decades, engineers used the road salt deicing system which reduces the buildup of snow on the roads and sidewalks. Therefore, it keeps the roads accessible for cars and pedestrians in winter season. What’s the impacts of using the road salt deicing system?
After researching the use of salt on the roads, I claim that the road salt deicing system is the main reason for traffic and road construction at the beginning of every summer. Although this act may be considered harmless in nature, it actually can destroy the environment. Tossing tons of salt in winter on highways, damages the infrastructure and environment. The salt doesn't just disappear when the snow and ice melts. It washes away into lakes and streams or seeps into groundwater supplies. When salt travels into lakes and streams, it can also damage aquatic plants, leads to animal’s death and human health issues. Changes in the salinity of a lake can also affect the way the water change. Another problem for using road salt deicing system, its ruins our infrastructure. It leads to corrosion of metal and steel, damage all underground pipes and wire connections, ruin the structure of concrete and crack concrete or road asphalt.
