Can People of Color be Racist? Racism is generally defined as a system of advantages based on race. However, the term racism has been controversial for many years and has been influenced by numerous people from different ethnic backgrounds. If you were to ask a African American Activist what racism is, most of them would say racism is institutionalize power plus prejudice. While if you were to ask a person of non-color the same question, they would simply refer to the webster dictionary definition, “The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.” Each individual in society has their own experience and perspective of racism based off the environment and ethnical culture they were raised in. Thats why their is not one definition of racism that is accepted by everyone in the world. This leads to the question; can people of color be racist? By exploring African American Activist’s general definition of racism that implies African American can not be racist, we can see that their definition of racism is highly problematic. Because African American Activists confuses institutional racism with just racism, they believe they can not be racist, but as we look beyond the media and investigate racism in other parts of the world, it is illogical that people of color can not be racist.
