In, “The New Science of Happiness,” Claudia Wells discusses 3 great ways to become more happy. By getting more pleasure out of life, becoming more engaged in what you’re doing, and finding ways to make your life more meaningful, Wells explains these actions can greatly influence your happiness levels. Savoring each and every sensory drop from any given moment will increase your gratitude towards life's seemingly mundane interactions. Which brings us to the large topic of gratitude which Wells, in conjunction with studies by psychologist Robert Emmons, explains that “Gratitude exercises can do more than life one’s mood… they improve physical health, raise energy levels, and, for patients with neuromuscular disease, relieve pain and fatigue.”…

My take on happiness deals more with perspective and the basic goods. Meaning, we live in a world where approximately 3.1 million children die from hunger each year (worldhunger.org). The simple fact that my myself and family do not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from is a blessing which keeps me happy. Therefore, knowing that I’m in a good place in the world and knowing that I have the basic things to survive like food, water, and shelter, keep me happy. One could say that I was lucky to have been born in a country that offers so much.…

Most of us can agree with this statement and acknowledge that they feel the most happiness in these conditions, but what exactly is happiness? “For if happiness is what people strive for, one needn’t waste time trying to figure out what makes people happy. One must only look at what people do” (Porter 460). We choose to work and make money to benefit our happiness.…

Myers and Jeeves give four ways to find happiness. The first was to “Break the Vicious Cycle of Negative Thinking.” Smiling really does help a person feel better and they appear brighter, for this reason, positive thoughts should be thought of and acted upon more. Personally i find happiness in playing basketball, writing poetry, and cooking, which I know will be different than the next person. In a song by Kid Cudi called the “Pursuit of Happiness” he describes how he was searching for happiness and says, “Everything that shines ain’t always going to be gold”. (Kid Cudi) He is describing how he wants to be happy so he tried to get it from spending money and buying shiny expensive items, but he learned that the happiness he seeks can’t come from expensive things. Also, it is misleading to mix between happiness as a wonderful feeling and the causes of happiness. For example, when I was in my senior year of high school, I applied to a scholarship to study in the US, but the acceptance rate was very low for international students. In fact, it was that station of my life, where I exerted all my mental and physical effort in order to gain this golden opportunity to study what I love. Despite the fact that it was truly hard to get this scholarship, I was one of those five students who got the scholarship. I was in my room in my high school dorm when I received the scholarship acceptance notification.…
