Can a Sign Save a Life? On July 20, 2012 James Holmes, snuck in to the back door of a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. He then began shooting innocent people in their seats, killing multiple and wounding many more. It was a late night showing of the new Batman film. The movie started at midnight, Holmes started firing off shots 30 minutes after the show started. The first 911 call wasn’t until 12:39, it took the local police 90 seconds to respond to the scene. This gave Holmes 10 minutes and 30 seconds to slaughter these blameless individuals. James Holmes drove by multiple theaters that night, before picking the Century movie cinemas. There were numerous different theaters closer to his apartment, he chose this particular theater because of the sign on the front door. This was a GUN FREE ZONE sign, meaning other than law enforcement no one else is able to carry a gun into this establishment. The law abiding citizens inside enjoying their movie had no way to protect themselves. It was like shooting fish in a barrel for Holmes. With over four percent of the adult population in Colorado having their concealed carry permit and over a hundred movie goers at the theater that night. The likely hood of one or more of these individuals having a firearm on their person would be probable. If this one or more concealed carry permit holder would have been able to carry their handgun in the theater, the tragedy could have turned out differently. That simple sign stops the law…
