Campus Smoking

Cigarettes are a habit that we all see, no matter where we go. However I believe we all have the right to have clean air. On campus smoking seems to be an issue for most people including myself. I am not supporting the habit but I believe there is a solution to both problems. Smokers should be able to have a designated area where they can smoke and non-smokers will be content, and can avoid these areas. Respect and Community are two of six, of Saint Leo’s core values. It will give them the impression that Saint Leo cares about both the smokers and non-smokers, and that they have found a simple solution to keep harmony around campus.

This will however limit where and when a smoker can smoke. It’s important to keep in mind that, it could be far worse, and no smoke on campus at all. E-Cigarettes are popular and an alternative to the smoke produced by a regular cigarette. E-Cigs should be an exception to the rule. These types of cigarettes produce a vapor when exhaled. Therefore this wouldn’t interfere with non-smokers. Saint Leo also has many visitors each day; students, workers, and facility should be aware of this. When they see a smoker smoking in a non-smoking area they should tell them about the designated areas, as well as direct them to a location if possible. It’s all about respecting each other’s space and being polite and respectful of the whole situation.

Smokers should respect the non-smokers in the community, and be aware of where they smoke. The solution to this problem is to have designated smoking areas on campus. We can’t just have no smoking on campus, because this will cause more problems. Instead, we have to make both sides of the situation happy and content. A survey should be taken to have see where the designated smoking areas would be more beneficial. There are many alternatives to this situation and I’m sure people around the campus would be more than happy to include some input. Saint Leo
