In a typical college campus, there are a plethora of locations which contribute to the overall success of a student’s academic studies and social experiences. In Cumberland County College, locations such as the library, the clock tower, and the writing center offer services that aid a student in their college struggles. One location in particular, the college cafeteria, has a wide variety of services that help cater to a student’s needs toward achieving their academic goals. Good nutrition is known for increasing academic performance, lowering psychosocial issues, and decreasing tardiness. Students are able to purchase their food within the kitchen area of the cafeteria. The cafeteria kitchen has a faint smell of baked goods upon entering. On the right side of the kitchen is various condiments such as ketchup, mustard, and barbecue sauce. Towards the back of the kitchen is the entrance of the line for food service. Once a student is in the line, he or she will be able to pick a food product and beverage from the various chrome shelves. Finally, the student is able to pay the cashier for the products he or she picked. The cafeteria is staffed with many talented and helpful cooks that allow the students to special order meals. The cafeteria kitchen offers tempting not-so-healthy options, such as delicious warm cheesesteaks and crisp golden french fries; as well as, nutritious options that can be easily customized by each student such as freshly blended fruit smoothies and robust leafy green salads. According to a professional journal in the medical field, “Students with low nutrient intakes had lower grade point averages” (Olsta 263). Therefore, the nutritious options that the cafeteria offers are capable of increasing a student’s academic performance. Nutrition also has an impact on lowering tardiness and absences (Olsta 263). Students also may notice after consuming nutritious food from the cafeteria for breakfast that they feel happier overall in class.
