Camp Widjiwagan (Rough Draft) Albus Dumbledore once said, “It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” Often, when summer comes around, many kids begin to dream about summer camp. Some of those kids actually get to live those dreams like I did, at Camp Widjiwagan, this summer. It was one week of a Harry Potter themed, outdoors day camp. Camp Widjiwagan was one of the best camps I’ve been to complete with fun and new learning experiences from the new and different people, to all the activities they had, to my overall outcome at the end of the week. One of the new learning experiences at Camp Widjiwagan was socializing with all the new people. I found that if I sat there and waited for something to happen I would never get to do anything fun. Being I got to make a first impression on them without my normal ludicrous mind messing with me I basically fit into all of their little social groups. I normally don’t speak and just observe and participate since I’m normally by myself. When it was the last day of camp and I mentioned how she left us alone a lot to her she said it was because she knew we wouldn’t want to do the kiddie stuff and also that if anything got out of hand I would take care of it. Like her noticed that most of the campers in our group saw me as mature and intimidating which really surprised me. Camp is place unlike any other. It is a place that people’s wall begin to fall down and new relationships are formed. This is bound to happen when you drop 200 teenagers in the middle of the Smoky Mountains without any of their electronics. I was lucky enough to be chosen for the Project Serve team and got to see camp from a new perspective. I got to be a part of all of the behind the scenes work, but also daily interactions with all of the campers due to my job at camp.…

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……

I spent six of my summers growing up at an all girls camp called Wavus. Wavus is a wilderness tripping camp in Maine based out of my hometown, Jefferson. Living in Jefferson, I did not obtain a great deal of exposure to other people from the country, let alone other parts of the world. When I went to Wavus I was put in a cabin with girls from all over the United States and even one from Belgium. Having to live with these girls for a month each summer enabled me to become close friends with them and learn about their lives.…

Every year that I travel up to camp, I look forward to meeting new people and forming some new friendships. In my room I have a plaque that reads “Camp Deerhorn Creed.” It was written by the founder of Camp Deerhorn, Dr. Don C. Broadbridge in 1930, and it lists out 13 of the most essential and important ways on how to act in order to become a gentleman. My two personal favorites are “Too spread sunshine and good cheer, just for the fun of it.”…

This scene was a gigantic dance party, and everyone seemingly enjoyed themselves regardless of how familiar they were with the experience or who they were beside. Typically, I joined in. I chanted my village name with my group of kids alongside me, following suit, and I already knew I had misjudged this camp. The week zoomed on and day by day I participated in sports, yard games, and leadership activities amid different kids.…
