Fort Slocum was originally named De Camp General Hospital during the Civil War to treat Union soldiers and later Confederate soldiers. But, when the hospital closed it was renamed Fort Slocum. Fort Slocum on David’s Island was built in 1862.1862 was when David’s Island was leased by the government. We started using Fort Slocum in July 1896. It was a military base on David’s Island.…
By the time summer of 1775 had come, the American Revolutionary War would be in full vigor. The British having overpowering number, and a dominant arsenal were easily defeating the newly formed Continental Army. A freshly appointed General George Washington knew that in order to push back the British he would have to take back one of the strongest positions and a main supply route. How did a newly formed Continental Army that was outnumbered, with limited supplies and weaponry, defeat the most powerful military force in the world at the time? Fort Ticonderoga was once named Fort Carillon.…
Inside of weeks of North Carolina's withdrawal from the Union, the Confederacy had built up a military vicinity on Roanoke Island. Roanoke Island determined its military centrality by goodness of its area close to the opening of two noteworthy sounds. By the winter of 1861-1862 there were three sand fortresses on the west side of the island, and little batteries on the east side and in the focal point of the island. Indeed, even with the fortresses, Confederate resistances were, be that as it may rather feeble.…
The Siege of Fort Ticonderoga British interests led them to Fort Ticonderoga on July 2nd, 1777, with the purpose of besieging the fort to reclaim it from the Americans. The British army consisted of 7,000 regulars, and 800 Indians/Canadiens; a significant amount of men compared to the garrison of 3,000 regulars at Ticonderoga. The British advanced and eventually set their eyes on the height of Sugar Loaf, and afterwards set up their encampment there, as the prospect of having a height advantage over the fort motivated them to encamp at the location. Men in the encampment worked cautiously to avoid being seen, with the reason being to try to catch the Americans by surprise. Unfortunately for the British, the element of surprise was lost, as…
This section of the book starts out with Elie and his father marching to the new camp of Buna. Buna was located in Monowice, Poland. Most of the occupants of Buna came from Auschwitz and were murdered once they arrived. Elie was one of the lucky ones, he arrived after the mass exodus’. He described the camp as “empty and dead” (pg. 47).…
Responsibility For most of the early work on Fort Pulaski fell on the shoulders of Lieutenant Robert E. Lee, recently graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Lee oversaw the preliminary construction, choosing the site and designing a system of drains and dikes to support the weight of the masonry fort. In 1831 Lieutenant Joseph K. Mansfield took charge of Pulaski's construction and oversaw the project for the next fourteen years. When finished in 1847, the fort could mount 146 cannons, some on the parapet atop the 7.5-foot-wide walls and others in casemates inside the walls.…
In an apocalyptic state after The Day, the town of Fort Repose is required to alter their mindset and expectations of the interworkings of their society. Resources that were once abundant and overlooked are now scarce, their pre-existing system for justice has turned into martial law, and the jobs of individual citizens have been altered completely. However, the most significant rule change is the crashing of the entire economy and monetary system. When Mr. Quisenberry arrives at the Western Union office, he is angered to hear that the message he is trying to send to the Atlanta Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank cannot be sent because it is not official defense information.…
Noor Rajab Jürgen Müller German III 02 February 2016 The “Fritz Ritz”: Camp Hearne Prisoner of War camps are a ghastly thing to think about. When mentioned, the horrors of Soviet and Nazi camps rush to mind, thoughtless massacres done by underlings for the “greater good”. Camp Hearne, however, is different. A Prisoner of War, or POW, camp now located in Hearne, Texas, Camp Hearne kept around 48,000 Nazi soldiers.…
It was a cold summer night and I could see the sun setting over the lake as I was arranging the lawn chairs around the campfire. I tried to dodge the clouds of gnats as I was running back and forth getting all the cards, snacks, and music ready. Just as I finished I saw the thirty teenagers walking up the long path to the camp directors house ready to participate in an evening activity I planned for them. I watched the girls race to get seats on the lawn chairs and helped the others find seats so they didn’t have to sit on the wet grass. The girls were laughing and having fun…
For the past 6 years of my life, I have gone to a sleepaway camp in Burnet, TX called Camp Longhorn Inks Lake. There are many enjoyable traditions at Camp Longhorn. Some of the\ traditions are the mile swim, campfire lighter, early bird, fun day, frog girl day, and marine/marina mud. Although these traditions are great fun, but none of them can compare to the most memorable tradition at Camp Longhorn, Church Mountain. Church Mountain is my favorite tradition at Camp Longhorn and my life has been infinitely changed by the experiences I have had up there.…
There was no possible way to hide the fact that I had church on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. While many of my friends spent their Friday nights are the homecoming football game, I was in church trying to teach a bible story to twenty beautiful, yet wreck less little kids. Towards the beginning of my High School years my friends actually attempted to invite me to all of the school activities, but after a while they began to give up and I would only see my friends in school. We grew apart and eventually I began to feel lonely. It’s not like they hated me, because they spoke to me as much as they could considering the fact that we were in a classroom with a teacher starring us down, but it was the simple fact that I was a “PK”.…

This was my life; an insecure student who had almost no friends, and even if he did, they weren’t really the best friends. They were more like acquaintances than friends. My life was not what I wanted it to be. Throughout all of middle school, my life was an empty void with almost no meaning until I decided to fully lean on God and his everyday truths. Near the end of my eighth-grade year, something clicked.…
In the past four years I have never felt more alone and isolated. For the past four years I have been doubting my faith. I didn't realize that my faith had weakened until I went to Camp Nazareth in 2015. I have been going to Camp Nazareth for three years now. Every year I have gone I've gone for a reason.…
The Camping Trip During the summer after my fifth grade school year had ended, I went on one of the worst camping trips in my life. It was sometime during the 2nd week of June. I was looking forward to this trip because all of my family was going. I mean everyone was going, my grandma & grandpa, my aunts & uncles, and my cousins. The year before not many of my family went, so that’s why I was looking forward to this camping trip.…
