During its first several months of operation, Camp Cooke housed a sizable number of hardcore Nazis from Waffen SS units and other formations. Most of these prisoners, and like-minded troublemakers that arrived later in the camp, were transferred to segregated camps for known Nazi sympathizers. For the most part, the POWs at Cooke were soldiers from infantry, armor, and airborne divisions. Among them were men from Field Marshal Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps which had surrendered to American, British, and French forces in May 1943. Luftwaffe and a small number of naval personnel rounded out the military services represented in the camp.…

That summer was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life; I learned, laughed, and cried everyday, I also created amazing friendships. I cannot remember what happened a week ago, let alone what happened months and years ago. The number of special memories and moments I have forgotten about is unquantifiable.…

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in the wild? Do you envision dangerous animals and food cooked over a fire you had to build? One way that you can have that experience is by camping on a nature preserve or at a large lake. I have camped many times while growing up but the two places I remember the most would be Wichita Mountains or Lake DeGrey. Both of the places are places that people can go camping at if they are looking to get out of the city.…

At night in the summertime it is even more peaceful and the scents and air are different. The air feels warm yet breezy and filled with the scent of pine trees and bark. The water feels a bit warmer because the sun has been beating on it all day. You can’t really see anything below you, and that’s what makes it awesome because it creates a sense of curiosity, but a bit freaky at the same time. Laying on my back in the water and looking up at the stars and the moon, is just a pretty sight.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

I just got done with my shift to protect Camp Half-Blood feeling very tired and stressed. With the camp’s protection being down and most of the campers going back to their families for the summer, this meant that there were very few of us to guard our safe haven. Not to mention I was still recovering from my broken ankle. I decided to take a walk down to the beach near the camp. Lately, I’ve found the sound of crashing waves, wind brushing through my hair, and the slight smell of salt hitting my face very soothing ever since I had met my best friend, Percy Jackson.…

Thanks the Texas Exes alumni, I was able to go to Camp Texas for free this year. I was nervous and scared because I’m not very good at socializing.
