When my mom was sick, it was extremely difficult for me to connect with others. I cried all the time. I had no one around me that understood what it was like to have a parent with cancer. Cancer. It took me a long time to even tell anyone my mom was sick. I felt so alone. I went into a very deep depression when my mom was going through treatments. I needed to be surrounded by others who knew what I was going through and could empathize with. That was the moment my mom told me about Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is a college student-run camp for kids aged six to sixteen who are coping with having a parent who has been diagnosed with cancer. The parent can have cancer, be in remission cancer-free, or passed away from cancer. When I signed up for camp, I watched Camp …show more content…
The first thing we did was introductions. We told everyone our name and then shared an interesting fact about us. The counselors in my group were: Sushi, Gus, BumbleBre, and Megasaurus. The teens other than myself were: Moonwalker, Slim Shady, Tiny Dancer, Talvi, Purple, Iggy, Red Man, and Scorpion. We all played a game of telephone, and it was hilarious. Due to something that came out during telephone, we decided to name our group the “Purple Pandas”. We all then made our way to the dining hall for dinner. I was expecting the gross cafeteria food I get at school. Boy, was I surprised! We had spaghetti, and it was so delicious.
After dinner, the entire camp went outside for the closing circle since we didn’t have enough time for the all-camp activity. We all sang a bunch of songs and I quickly caught on to the lyrics. Some songs, all I had to do was repeat what someone else was saying, so it was easy. After we sang, we all dispersed to our cabins. Since it was an hour until lights out, us girls went into our rooms and talked. I shared a room with Sushi, Purple, and Iggy.
