Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…

Throughout high school, I have been involved in many activities. I started off with the STEM academy in my high school. In the STEM academy, we held special events that teach people, especially kids, about new experiments and science-related careers. I helped out the STEM academy by explaining people about the experiments, the purpose behind the experiments and cleaned or organized lab equipment. I was a part of the STEM academy for approximately three years in high school and I really enjoyed it because I knew I could make a difference in my community.…

What makes a leader? A leader can be anyone from the President of a country, to a kid in the schoolyard, telling kids what team they will be on during recess. The Camp Sebago mission is to emphasize to the campers that a leader is not someone who bosses others around, a leader is someone who serves his people and works for them, and helps them become better versions of themselves. A French novelist by the name of Andre Malraux made this very clear in one of his most famous quotes “To command is to serve, nothing more and nothing less.” At the time when he said this it may not have meant much, but to Camp Sebago it is everything that we strive to achieve.…

The specific leadership I am referring to with the organization Free the Children, is the two week Leaders in Training facilitation camp that I was recommended for. It was the first time that this program had run and they were looking to have a small group of dedicated, inspiring, passionate, hard working and interesting upper year high school to be a part of it. The program was slightly difficult to adjust to since it had never been run before, but the five applicants selected made it into the amazing experience it was. The entire point of the program was to create an environment where older more experienced campers could gain leadership experience by helping younger campers, learn more about social justice issues they are passionate about and gained skilled needed to be a facilitator later on.
