Dover’s Hispanic population has increased dramatically in recent years, and the majority of the immigrants has no English knowledge upon arrival. Despite this obstacle in communication, it is plausible to show love and kindness to my Hispanic neighbors. Therefore, I joined an tutoring program for the elementary aged Hispanic children--Camp Imagine If. Camp Imagine If is an after-school study program that seeks to address the special challenges of elementary students still learning to speak English. The program helps students in first through fifth grade and began as the idea of two Dover High School students five years ago.
Throughout four years of my high school, I have tutored one third-grader girl named Juana. The student’s parents, who may well be illiterate themselves, fully recognize the value of a solid education for their children, who were born here and are U.S. citizens. Camp Imagine If is held every Thursday at 3:15 to 5 p.m. at the Dover Alliance Church. About 50 students work with 25 tutors, and each student is assigned to a specific tutor for continuity. I am really surprised when I receive sweet notes with cute stickers from Juana that stated “you’re the best tutor ever,I love you!” and I aim to live up to that each week. Juana told me about her family and where they came from, she also told me about her dog. In my volunteer experience, I felt like my friendship has grown closer to Juana than ever. We are more like intimate best friends which we can share little secrets through English and Spanish.
