Camp Hometown Scholarship Essay

There are many things in my life that I’ve done that I am rather proud of. These include volunteering, Boy Scouts of America, good grades, and others as well. But two things that stick out to me are being able to volunteer at Camp Hometown Heroes and being able to help organize and put on a scholarship fund.
Camp Hometown Heroes is a free, weeklong, summer camp for the children and siblings of fallen U.S Soldiers. What’s unique about the camp is that the person who died didn’t have to pass away in action. They could have passed away in a car accident, cancer, other illness, etc. Most camps like this only allow combat death. I had the opportunity to attend this camp in its inaugural year as a camper and I’m now a camp counselor. The reason I attend the camp is due to the loss

When my brother passed away we knew we had to do something in his honor that would carry on for years to come so that his memory would never leave us. My family got together with one of Josh’s best friends and we decided on the fisheree. Every year I contact local and corporate businesses to acquire physical donations for the door prizes and silent auction we host at the fisheree. I’ve sent letters to many businesses and most reply and are happy to send us something to use in the auctions. After everything's said and done with every last cent goes into a scholarship in my brothers name here at Portage High School. We have given out approximately $4,500 dollars in scholarships. We will be giving away another two $500 dollar scholarships this year. The scholarship recipient is vetted and picked by my family in a meeting. The scholarships go to people that we believe shared the same ideals that my brother did. Giving back in my brothers name like this has taught me that moving on is important. Not just for the good of myself but for the good of others as well. It feels good to give back to the community in any way that I

The teachers and my peers have all been an influence on my life and during the four years that I spent at the school, I have done some things for the school and the community as a way to thank them for giving me the opportunities that they have. It was they who pushed me to keep trying and striding to succeed and without them, I would not have accomplished what I have today. One of the things that I am most proud of doing is helping to bring new clubs and activities to Barnegat High School. I decided to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU) for a variety of reasons, including the location of its campus, because I was offered a full scholarship, and of course, because of the pharmacy program. Moreover, I believe that I am the ideal candidate for being a part of FAMU’s pharmacy program. To begin, FAMU is located in Tallahassee, Florida, a city that I had wanted to attend college in since I was in elementary school. Tallahassee is a city of containing and surrounded by many events and opportunities, so no matter your preferred “scene,” you are likely to be able to find something you do. Another upside to FAMU’s location is that it also places me very close to my mother and the rest of my maternal family, who I had previously not gotten to see almost since elementary school.…

Additionally, I am also a nonprofit volunteer group called Yerkrapah which means Keepers of the Country. The purpose of the organization is to help the families whose family member was injured, disabled, or killed during the war. We help them, with food, cloths, medical expenses, and many more. The organization now has a program that those family members who struggle and have a medical problem do not need to pay anything from seeing a doctor up to surgery expenses. This helps to ensure that even though they lost their loved one but there are still people who care and will take care of them.…

I believe that my admission to the KU School of Nursing would contribute to this philosophy in many ways. I was raised in a community where a Hispanic woman, like myself, was not expected to graduate from high school, let alone attend college. The expectations for minorities are not set as high, which is unbelievable and also very sad. There is hope for minorities like me and I believe that my admission into your school would show my community as well as many patients that minorities can have a successful career and anybody can rise beyond where they were raised.
