Sullen and scowling, Percy lumbered to Anna’s cottage. On the way, in a puddle, Percy caught sight of his reflection. He didn’t realize he looked almost as rough as Wallace, with a split lip and a bloody nose, though only one black eye. It pleased Percy that Wallace had two.
Ulrich tossed open his door before Gawain had the chance to knock. “What in the name of Camelot…?” Ulrich shook his head. “Never mind. I can guess what this is about. Come in. Dear mighty gods, will I have to go through this with Nia and Cadi, too?”

“I am not sure about that, Percy. You showed a frightening side of you, and that’s not something I can live with.”
“You’ve made your decision,” said Father, “and these boys will abide by it.”
Gawain ushered Percy and Wallace to the door. “Time to go.”
“No,” muttered Percy, until he found his voice again. “No! Please don’t do this. Anna, I love you.”
Father grabbed Percy’s arm and dragged him away. Percy braced his hands and feet in the doorway, making a spectacle of himself as he shouted, “I love you!”
Father pulled Percy out of the cottage and swatted the back of his head. “Stop it right now. She needs time, and you are going to give it to her.”
“She’s not asking for time. She’s done with me.”
“If you keep behaving like this, Anna will never give you another chance. Comport yourself. We’re going home.”
Father and Gawain muttered their farewells, but Percy and Wallace did not look at each other.
