That is right, giraffes have four stomachs. They are ruminants, or something that has more than one stomach. The Rumen and Reticulum are the first two stomachs. Their job is to blend the leaves and twig with saliva. Once the food goes through the Rumen and the Reticulum, it travels to the third stomach, known as the Omasum. The omasum soaks up the water and other important nutrients that the first two stomachs did not absorb. And lastly, the Abomasum. It breaks down the food that was not yet broken down, almost like how the human stomach breaks down food. The giraffe’s stomach is very complex, but allows the giraffe to maintain a plant based diet. Giraffes can go weeks without drinking water, because their stomachs can hold many gallons of water. But they do rely on water that is found in their food.Giraffes have an average lifespan of about 25 years. They only need about two hours of sleep every day.
