Human beings, often respond in a positive, negative, or in a nonchalant manner when confronted by another individual. The type of response that is verbalized is dependent on how passionate the person is about the topic that has been declared, especially when it concerns a chosen profession. Individuals often obtain employment due to certain needs, such as to provide for family members, as oppose to wants. Paco Underhill, a retail anthropologist, is one individual who chose his profession and though Underhill is a man of many talents, may be considered to be a voyeur, by individuals such as Hillary Chatswin. At the cross section of behavioral economics and ethics lies the blueprint of ethical consumption. As a core tenet of ethical consumption, fair trade ‒ a movement and label for products supplied by producers with fair and safe compensation for their work ‒ behaves as a combatant against human rights violations, particularly human trafficking, and promotes transparency and development for “marginalized” workers. With a 15% global increase in fair trade sales from 2012 to 2013, according to Fairtrade International, a major fair trade certifier since 1997, fair trade has grown in recognition in both consumer and academic circles, spurring extensive investigation into the internal and external components of ethical consumption. Sir Thomas More described utopia as an ideal humanist island, where there is freedom and harmony within the community. Peter Weir in his film, The Truman Show, presented his version of utopia, a town called Seahaven. This essay will analyze the film as a critique of consumerism. The name of the city itself is, as Smicek points out, an anagram of, “as heaven,” that seems to, “replicate a saccharine of 1950 's American suburbia” (33). The main character, Truman, lives in the, “pastiche of Capra-esque small-town picket-fence America,” the suburban paradise with perfect laws, pastel-coloured homogenous Victorian-style houses with large perfectly mowed front yards and typical sedans (Swintice).…

In the Science of Shopping, Malcolm Gladwell introduces Paco’s works and his ideas. Paco uses his strategies to help store owners, but Malcolm asks us “Should we be afraid of Paco Underhill?” Since Paco can manipulate people in a shopping mall, invade privacy, and analyze every shoppers’ move through his hidden camera, he could be a dangerous person.
