The following is based on a thorough analysis of the Camberwell Shopping precinct, which is centred on Burke, Camberwell and Riversdale roads in Camberwell.

Perhaps the biggest opportunity currently available to Council regarding the Camberwell shopping precinct would involve a commodity which many would view as their biggest current strength – their markets. Opened back in the 1940s, it offers all of the very latest in blockbuster movies in a venue that beautifully retains a large amount of its original decor largely due to the fact that it has a place on the Australian National Trust Register.
The Rivoli’s Art Deco style is widely admired as one of the finest examples of ‘moderne design’ in Melbourne. With its grand staircase, unique circular patterned carpet and a rooftop garden, the Rivoli has inspired both lovers of film and architecture for generations (The Iconic Rivoli Cinema, 2015). It is without doubt one of the Camberwell shopping precinct’s finest jewels and this stronghold should be used to its maximum potential. Opportunity 3 – Healthy Eating
A final strength of the town of Camberwell is the apparent policy of Council that ensures that the majority of take away foods in the precinct are relatively healthy foods. Our research has determined that of the 30 plus takeaway establishments, there are no McDonalds or KFC franchises which would be extremely unlikely unless it was a deliberate policy. There are also no fish and chip shops, no Thai restaurants and nowhere sells kebabs.
