Cal would step in as the job as their mother if Atticus wasn’t at home, or had to work late at night. She would dress the kids and make their breakfast in the mornings before school or just a day outside playing/exploring with Dill. In addition, she would teach Scout lessons on how to be nice; especially to Walter Cunningham; just like a mother would. On another note, Atticus was comfortable trusting Calpurnia to take his place if he couldn’t be there. “But there came a day when Atticus told us he’d wear us out if we made any noise in the yard and commissioned Calpurnia to serve in his absence if she heard a sound out of us” (Lee 15). This shows that Calpurnia is trusted and can keep Scout and Jem safe in Atticus’s absence. In this novel, Cal demonstrates all characteristics of being motherly. They didn’t care if she was African American, she was just a lady trying to fill in the shoes of a wife/mother the Finch family
