Three traits that make up what a triumphant mother looks like are: discipling children properly, displaying that they love and care for the kids, and to teach good morality. Both Calpurnia and Atticus demonstrate these traits within the book which proves them to be successful maternal substitutes. Calpurnia, a character in the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee, is motherly, courageous, and loyal. First of all, she is a housekeeper and “mother figure” to the Finch family who lives in Maycomb County, Alabama. Calpurnia is motherly because she has been around for most of the kid’s lives and practically raised them with Atticus (the father). She has taught Scout how to read and even disciplines her and her brother. For example, in the novel Scout says, “ ‘Calpurnia sent me through the swinging door to the dining room with a smack’ ”…

In this journal I will be questioning whether Calpurnia is a better mother than Aunt Alexandra. One way she is a better mother figure then Aunt Alexandra is she is responsible. It said, “ We watched Calpurnia running toward the Radley Place” (Lee 124). After she got to the front steps she told them a rabid dog was coming. She is responsible in that event because she was saving the Radley’s lives by warning them.…

Calpurnia treats Scout and Jem as her own children an example is her bringing them to her church. Another example is Calpurnia calling Scout sweetie and hush baby. Another reason that she is a better mother figure is she will punish the kids as if they were her own. The kids see her as a mother for comfort and scout goes to her when she’s sad. A great way to show this is when Scout goes to Calpurnia for when Jem wont hangout with her because he’s getting older which show’s how Scout see’s her as a mother.…
