Calpurnia Is A Good Mother Essay

In this journal I will be questioning whether Calpurnia is a better mother than Aunt Alexandra. One way she is a better mother figure then Aunt Alexandra is she is responsible. It said, “ We watched Calpurnia running toward the Radley Place” (Lee 124). After she got to the front steps she told them a rabid dog was coming. She is responsible in that event because she was saving the Radley’s lives by warning them. Also she risked her life by going over to tell the family what she said. This also means she is caring for the Radleys. The second way she is responsible is she let Jem and Scout go to her church with her because Atticus was gone on business. She was responsible by making them go to church with her. Which in the South was a big deal …show more content…
She is a better mother figure then Aunt Alexandra because she is caring. When she let Jem and Scout go to church she bathed them and got them ready by getting nice clothes out for them. She said “ I don’t want anybody sayin I don’t look after my children” (Lee 157). This shows she is caring because she loves and treats them like her own children and she acts like they are her actual kids. Another way she is caring is at church when they were at the part where you put money in a basket, Calpurnia did not let them use there own money because they were her guest, so they got dimes from Calpurnia. She is caring because she probably does not get that well of pay and she still sacrifices her money to give to the kids at church even though they had there own money. The last way she is caring is how she acts with them and knows when they are upset. Example is “ We skulked around the kitchen until Calpurnia threw us out. By some voo-doo system Calpurnia seemed to know all about it. She was a less that satisfactory source of palliation, but she did give Hem a hot biscuit-and-butter” (Lee

Here are some examples of Calpurnia's interactions. Though Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra have very different parenting techniques, Scout is still given a great example of what a woman, as well as mother, does and is. Even though Calpurnia is the hired help at the Finch house she acts as a very strong and ever present mother figure to both Jem and Scout. She has been the one to care for Scout and Jem since they were young. She is regarded as a very important person in the Finch home.…

The texts The End of Remembering by Joshua Foer and “The Ordinary Devoted Mother” by Alison Bechdel, while are stylistically very different, addresses the same themes of the memory and one’s self-identity. Foer, while not as cold or detached as a scientific paper, uses a more formal and traditional tone when compared to Bechdel who approaches these themes through the lens of a graphic novel. The result of this gives two very distinct perspective on how memories affect one’s self identity. Foer’s theoretical framework of how memory functions and Bechdel’s more anecdotal approach of the effects of her personal memories on her life, provides two very distinctive perspectives on how the prioritization of memories are connected with the creation…

The fact that Author Radley was actually a good person awaked Scout morally, and let she understand Atticus words. “One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.” The branch line of Boo Radley had been a central one that connected the whole story, and Harper Lee wrote it in a refreshing and adorable way to reveal the essence of the book’s theme. A mockingbird is a lovely songbird that does no harm but goods to people, and to kill one is completely against human conscience. However, a mockingbird’s benefit and innocence to human is much easier to grasp, than that of a person.…
