Calpurnia As A Mother Figure Essay

I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and I am on page 207. So far this book is about Scout and Jem growing up and learning more about their family and town. Also, the children are forced to endure insults from almost every white person in town, due to their father representing a black man, Tom Robinson, in court. In this journal I will be evaluating and Questioning. In my opinion, Calpurnia is a better mother figure than Aunt Alexandra. Calpurnia is a good mother figure. Calpurnia loves the children a lot. She has taken care of them since they were babies because their mother passed away. While being caring, she is also very strict with the children. Jem and Scout must always be on their best behavior around Calpurnia. If they are not, Cal is not afraid to punish them and put them in their places. She always seems to know when they are up to no-good or are lying to her. She does not take any back talk from them and does not put up with any of their nonsense. She does not let them get away with having an attitude or being rude to people. Aunt Alexandra is not a good mother figure. She does not accept the children for who they are and only wants to change them. She hates that Scout does not act like a normal girl. Scout refuses to wear dresses and stay out of the mud. She thinks they need to grow up and start behaving like a Finch should. She says that Finches are not normal people and that the children should learn how to act more like a little lady and gentleman. She expects them to act proper like her even though she doesn’t really even take care of them. For the first month she was staying with them, she was too busy spending time with the women in the town to even pay any attention to the children.
