I think Calpurnia is a better mother figure for the reasons I am going to be listing. Calpurnia practically lives with the the Finch’s so she has a lot of daily interactions with Jem and Scout. Here are some examples of Calpurnia's interactions. Scout's Empathy "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view" (Lee 39). Atticus' quote in the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee teaches Scout to not judge a person because of their actions until you have put yourself in their shoes. Various examples in the book show how people react in a situation that they may not understand or agree with. For example, when Miss Caroline doesn't understand that Walter is poor and when Scout watches Walter pours molasses all over his food. Experiences can teach a person to react with empathy rather than judging them incorrectly.…

Through the many violent impulses, instances of bad language, and formations of prejudices, the adults have told Scout right from wrong, and have helped her learn a lesson that will stick with her forever. Each of these adults has a different relationship with Scout. Atticus, although he is her father figure, he seems to be more distance. In evaluating the characters of Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra, I have found Calpurnia to be the better mother figure to Scout. Calpurnia, the Finch’s cook, is a positive role model and mother figure for both of the Finch children, Scout in particular. One piece of evidence that supports this is the way she treats Scout as she would her own child. When Jem and Dill exclude Scout from their games, the first person Scout runs to is Calpurnia, and Cal welcomes her with open arms. Cal tells Scout that there is nothing she can do about Jem, but goes on to assure her that the kitchen is a safe space for Scout to come when she needs a friend.…

By Calpurnia pushing Scout to treat people equally no matter their differences, she shows us that she takes a huge part in Scout’s moral development. One day the Finch’s have Walter Cunningham over for supper because Scout beats him up and Jem tells him to come over for supper. When they get home and sit down for supper, Walter starts pouring syrup all over his plate but Scout isn’t use to that. Scout thinks it is not normal and weird so Scout makes a rude comment about Walter’s actions so Calpurnia requests Scout to come to the kitchen. When Scout goes in the kitchen Calpurnia, she says “That boy’s yo’ comp’ny.”…
