The whole course of the story would be altered if not for Calpurnia’s influence. Resulting from the premature unfortunate demise of Scout and Jem’s mother, Atticus alone was left to care for his children. However, Calpurnia’s womanly presence eventually started to fill the void of the children’s missing mother as she started taking some of the responsibilities a mother would have. Calpurnia’s role in the family of doing daily essential tasks escalated to the point where the Finch’s “couldn’t operate a single day without Cal,”(Ch. 3). Racism and segregation are the two main themes of the novel and are the characteristics that all characters are defined. The community is split between people who fear and hate (such as the members of the jury who convicted an innocent man of rape because of his colour), and those like Atticus and Calpurnia who show understanding and sympathy towards those who might be different or less fortunate. Those traits are carried onto Jem and Scout. For example, when Scout brings Walter home for dinner and then mocks his table manners, Calpurnia scolds her and says that "all guests should be treated with respect no matter what their social station". Atticus also makes decisions based on behavior and not their background.…

As I am reading the story, I am Characterizing Atticus in two different ways. First, Atticus is a good father. One reason that he is a good father is that he is flexible and open minded. Foer, while not as cold or detached as a scientific paper, uses a more formal and traditional tone when compared to Bechdel who approaches these themes through the lens of a graphic novel. The result of this gives two very distinct perspective on how memories affect one’s self identity. Foer’s theoretical framework of how memory functions and Bechdel’s more anecdotal approach of the effects of her personal memories on her life, provides two very distinctive perspectives on how the prioritization of memories are connected with the creation…

Cows, for the most part, have been perceived as innocent creatures throughout the centuries. In various judicial systems, humans, too, are thought to be innocent until proven guilty. As history has shown on many occasions during times of war, innocent people are killed needlessly. In “A Mother’s Tale”, written by James Agee, a mother cow warns her cattle of the gruesome deeds inflicted upon cattle who travel out onto the range through the telling of the tale of the One Who Came Back. The One Who Came Back went through numerous trials, such as the denial of basic necessities and the sensation of being skinned alive, when he was chosen to ‘retire’ on the range.…
