Jem is starting to grow up, so he sometimes upsets Scout and Scout goes to Calpurnia for safety. When Calpurnia gets Jem and Scout ready for church, she makes sure they look nice. Jem and Scout are going to be the only white people attending the church, so Calpurnia wants to show she is raising the kids correctly by making sure they do not look like slobs. At Calpurnia’s church, a woman named Lula got mad at Calpurnia for bringing two white children to an all black church. Calpurnia held onto Jem and Scout tight and whispered things into Scout’s ear to make sure Scout feels safe while Calpurnia is fighting with Lula. Calpurnia stayed in the middle of Jem and Scout the whole time they were at church to keep the kids safe. While they were walking to their seats Calpurnia walked between Jem and Scout, and she sat in the middle of Jem and Scout during the service. My second reason why Calpurnia is a better mother figure is, she is kind toward Jem and Scout. Atticus was gone and Calpurnia asked Jem and Scout if they would like to go to church with her. Scout spoke for both herself and Jem

However, they were lack of feminine influences as their mother died when they were little. But throughout the book, the reader quickly learned that there are numbers of women that play crucial roles in filling in the gap of femininity that presents in the children’s state of mind. One of the evidence is in chapter 3, where we see Calpurnia, the housekeeper, educate Scout to become a better person at treating other people. When Aunt Alexandra first arrives at the Finch house she immediately orders Calpurnia to take her suitcase. “Put my bag in the front bedroom, Calpurnia” (Lee 169). Her first reaction to Calpurnia is to order her to put her bag away, giving no acknowledgment that she is anything other than a servant. In the classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, many different families are depicted throughout the book. These families, and especially the children, show how the values of the parents are reflects in their children’s behavior. Many of the children in the book act in ways of which Harper Lee clearly disapproves, while others seem to be struggle to embody the good values their parents demonstrate. In particular, Scout and Jem, Dill, and Burris Ewell provide clear examples of how children tend to respond to the way their parents live. Harper Lee shows us how the character Atticus has control over the way Scout and Jem behaves without being a strict parent and handles things logically instead of being irrational.…
