Introduction

The purpose of this lab is to find the most efficient way to capture energy from a combusted chip using a calorimeter. We made a basic calorimeter by using a steel can. Through out our lab we made modifications to the calorimeter to increase the percent of energy captured by the water.

Literature Review

Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. The kinetic energy of an object is energy that is being used. Potential energy is stored energy that it is not in motion, but has the potential to be in motion. “Chemists often use a device known as a bomb calorimeter to measure the heat exchanges associated with chemical reactions, especially combustion reactions,” (Calorimeters…). Other types of calorimeters are a coffee cup calorimeter (calorimetry with a constant pressure) and a beaker with a flame under it is known as simple calorimeters. Specific heat (C) is the amount of energy an object absorbs before the temperature changes. The temperature changes by how much mass there is in an object. The mass of an object depends on how much heat is needed for temperature change. Enthalpy (H) is the amount of energy that absorbs or leaves a system. Calorimetry is the science of measuring the movement of the heat. The Calorimetry equation is H= C x M x (Tf-Ti). Enthalpy is H and it is measures in Joules, Specific Heat Capacity is C, Mass is M and it is measured in grams, Tf is the final temperature in degree Celsius, and Ti is the initial temperature in degree Celsius.

Conclusion

The data shows that group 3 had the most efficient calorimeter. Our calorimeter did increase the energy captured by the water with every modification we made during the trials. To modify the calorimeter you can change the can to a Styrofoam cup or aluminum can. You could also add more insulation to your calorimeter. Any of these modifications can make your energy captured by water go up.
