Brooke Beams February 2, 2012 Experiment 1 Determination of the Components of a “Mixed Drink” INTRODUCTION. For this experiment standard solutions of Kool-Aid flavors will be prepared to measure the absorbance at lambda max and plot the results against the concentration of solution to generate a standard curve. Then it must be determined the amount of each flavor in a sample of the unknown by comparison to your standard curves. The ingredient in each flavor of the Kool-Aid that was tested is Blue 1 and Red 40. The Lambda max for red 40 is 503nm and for the blue 1 it is 629nm.…
In 2010, a law was passed that required restaurants to list the calorie counts on their menus. Since the law was passed there has been much controversy about listing the calories on menus. Despite this controversy, the FDA should continue attempts to educate citizens about their calorie intake because it can lead to healthier lifestyles for those who put what they have learned into action. In the article “FDA-Required Calorie Counts”, it states that the 2010 law is problematic because it allows exceptions for many places that could benefit from showing calories.…
Health and nutrition, particularly my own, is something I have taken special interest in lately as I’ve come to realize I’m rapidly approaching the second half of my life and want it to be as good as, or even better than, the first half. If I were to be asked eight weeks ago if I was a healthy person, my answer would be a resounding, “Yes;” my regular physicals and blood work confirming my response. And while I still believe that to be true, what an eye opener the Diet Analysis project was, as far as understanding my actual nutritional intake in comparison to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of nutrients recommended for optimal health and well-being. The following paragraphs not only detail the Diet Analysis PLUS program used for this project,…
Calorie Intake As stated before, my client is a 22 year old female who is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds, and has a body mass index (BMI) of 21. By using the Harris-Benedict Equation in the Clinical Calculation box 22-5, I calculated that my client’s body needs a total of 1,989.60 kilocalories every day for energy (Lutz, Mazur, and Litch, 2015, p. 523). Looking back at my client’s food dairy, I can see she ingested a total of 7,000 calories in that three day period and, according to my calculation, she only needed 5,968.80 kilocalories, for the three days, to provide her body with proper energy to function. For the total three days my client exceed her energy needs, but when looking at each day, she did not met her body’s needs on day three. According to the food dairy, on day one she consumed 3,156 calories, on day two 2,672 calories and on day three…
Summary Throughout the Fitwell nutrition project I made many discoveries about my diet. Based on the Harris Benedict Equation, I found that I am eating approximately four hundred calories more than the suggested amount. This somewhat surprised me because I have not gained any weight since I arrived at college. However, what most likely put me over the top was my consumption of soft and crunchy white chocolate macadamia nut cookies that I so much enjoy.…
Reviewing the vitamin section of my 5-day dietary report it is apparent that I am failing to reach the DRI for the vitamin Alpha-Tocopherol and vitamin D while surpassing the DRI for vitamin A. To increase my consumption of Alpha-Tcocphaerol (vitamin E) I can consume more avocados, spinach, and egg yolks are also a good source. To increase my vitamin D in take to reach the DRI I can consume more fish such as tuna and salmon. Lastly, my diet was high in vitamin A that can be harmful to my health if it builds up for the remaining part of my life. In order to reach an appropriate range of vitamin A in my diet I will can consume less carrots as I eat them regularly as a snack throughout my day.…
In a spreadsheet, I was able to track my meals and calories throughout three days. The spreadsheet was broken down between how many fruits, vegetable, grains, protein foods, milk, and fats, and discretionary calories I obtained each day. Discretionary calories are excess calories that we are allowed to eat once our nutrient needs have been met (Sizer and Whitney 43-44). Discretionary calories are usually foods containing higher fats and sugars…
Individuals do not realize the amount of food they consume on an average day until keeping a daily food journal. The two-day food journal gave me keen insight into the number of calories and nutrients I was providing my body. After evaluating my results, I concluded there are several things I could do in the future to improve my daily eating habits to benefit my overall health. Throughout the two days, my nutritional caloric intake revealed how different types of foods have a different effect on my body.…
a meal having only 225 calories is not a lot based on a suggested intake of 2000 calories per day. Can You Trust the Calories Listed by…
I am completing the individual organization assignment on the Kennett Nutrition Program located in Kennett, Missouri. This program has been providing services and opportunities to the rural community for 40 years. I chose this program because I have a personal connection to these services. I attend the center once a month to participate in the lunch and facilitate the Bible bingo activity that afternoon. I work at a local long-term care rehab and nursing facility and I enjoy working closely with the elderly population.…
Before this project began, I thought my diet was ok. During certain days, I would eat very healthy. On other days, I would eat very unhealthy. My diet consists of many fruits, vegetables, and healthy grains. I didn’t change the amounts of food I ate.…
In the article “How Much Fat Per Day – How Many Grams Of Fat Should You Eat?” (2007-2014) written by A Calorie Counter, it demonstrates that calculating the amount of calories a person needs in one day can be done easily. The author starts his article explaining what calories do for our body and how keeping it at a healthy rate is better for us in the bigger picture, and ends it with the numbers to punch in to calculate the amount of calories we need. The purpose is to help people stay healthy and track their calories per day. The intended audience is anyone who cares about what they are eating and how it could affect their body.…
CALORIMETER FORMAL LAB It never crosses one’s mind to think why food is measured in Calories. Many nutritionists are not sure of the true origin of the Calorie or why it’s supposed to be capitalized. Traditionally, a Calorie is the amount of energy needed to heat one kilogram of water one degree Celsius. It appears it was first used in engineering and physics, and then found its way in nutrition.…
Richie Harkenrider 12/5/16 Diet Analysis Paper Part 2 Introduction: Nutrition is extremely important in living a healthy lifestyle. Keeping an eye on your personal daily nutrition values and intake is vital to an effective diet. After analyzing my diet over a period of time, I was finally able to give myself an overall grade for each of the six core nutritional concept.…
For the Nutrition tracker, I decided to use the website My Fitness Pal. I used this site because I have already been using it to track my consumption for the last few weeks as I try to increase my overall health. In my opinion, my diet this week was very disappointing with respect to my diet goals. My diet was severely lacking with respect to its completeness. For the most part I had no real fruits or vegetables, the only consumption of those food groups came as a topping on my burger or other main entrees.…
