In the book, The Call of the Wild, John London has many themes. One of the themes is love. Specifically, love between a dog and his owner. This is mainly shown through Buck’s love for John Thornton. There has been a test done in Japan three years ago giving proof that dogs can love. The test showed that “dogs and humans were engaging in cross-species gaze-meditated bonding using the same oxytocin system.” Oxytocin is a hormone that works as a neurotransmitter in the brain, also known as the “love drug.” The article later says that when “humans and dogs stare into each other’s eyes, they each register a spike of the so-called ‘love drug,’ oxytocin.” This shows that dogs can love. Thornton makes a bet that Buck could pull a thousand pound sled himself. In chapter 6 paragraph 5, page 92 it says “Thornton’s command cracked out like a pistol. Buck threw himself forward, tightening the traces with a jarring lunge.” Buck was willing to try to pull the sled for him. Later in the paragraph on page 93, it also says “The jerks, though it never really came to a dead stop again… half an inch… an inch… two inches. The sled gained momentum, he caught them up, till it was moving steadily along.” That quote showed that Buck struggled to pull the sled, but he didn’t give up. When Thornton falls off a boat into a river; Buck jumps into the river even though he could possibly drown. In chapter 6 paragraph 2 page 85 it says “Buck had sprung in on the instant; and at the end of three hundred yards, amid a mad swirl of water, he overhauled Thornton. When he felt him grab his tail, Buck headed for the bank.” Buck partially drowns and breaks some of his ribs saving Thornton’s life.
