half the world will live under conditions of high water stress.” – Powers 2015. In the last 50
years the population has doubled. The growth followed by economic development and
industrialization has drastically changed our ecosystems and we have lost biodiversity because
of it. The lack of water that we have had affects every single continent and around 2.8 billion
people in the world at least once a year. During the summer British Columbia reached extreme
dry conditions and was pushed to level 4 drought conditions while a severe drought in
California is now approaching 4 years long and B.C is now heading for an California drought.

Singapore is number one for
the highest water stress ranking in the world while being heavily populated and no fresh water
lakes make their need for water even more crucial. California has past their fourth year of
droughts although they are not the only state facing water shortage issues; parts of
Washington, Oregon and the Colorado River Basin have been in droughts for over a decade.
Unfortunately, it has destroyed our ecosystems and more. The Aral Sea has shrunk to
less than half of it’s original size and has became as salty as the ocean. Floods and droughts
have taken over thousands of people's lives and have caused billions of dollars in damage to the
economies and communities. Fresh water species are disappearing! In the United States about
54% of wetlands have been absent. Water shortage has fatal affects on
ecosystems for example many species of fish, birds, and reptiles in freshwater ecosystems have
an 37% deterioration in freshwater systems since 1970. Many rivers including the Colorado
River are running very dry when the population grows so does the need for water. Glaciers
