According to an article by Harvard University on immigration and the railroads in the west, the Chinese made up 80% of the labor workforce on the Central Pacific Railroad. However, the National Origins Act put a cap on Chinese immigration per year in 1929 at 150,000 immigrants. The Chinese were also heavily taxed during the Gold Rush, but most paid the tax in order to mine for gold. Many Chinese immigrants ended opening businesses in California such as restaurants and laundry mats. Other Chinese workers found work for large companies and labor intensive jobs. Alcatraz Island was first used during the Gold Rush to protect San Francisco with the increasing population and increasing rates of crime. The island began being used as a prison in the late 1850’s and continued to be used for that purpose for many years to come. The island was transferred to the U.S. Department of Justice and turned into a maximum-security prison in 1933. Alcatraz was a prison that held some of the most dangerous felons, such as Al Capone. The prison was eventually shut down due to the high cost of operation. Due to the prison being surrounded by water it meant that all supplies had to be delivered by ships, which was expensive. The island eventually became a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and later opened it up to the public for tourists to
