Today we leave Fort Kearney to follow the Platte River until we reach the California Crossing. We will walk 170 miles and will take about 19 days to reach our destination. Yesterday Charles got food poisoning from eating raw meat. The Kenneth Flag family made us bacon to eat for breakfast. I thought it was odd to now just start giving us food when we're in the middle of nowhere but I didn't want to be rude and not take it. Charles was the first to eat the bacon and the first to get food poisoning. I don't know if they purposely didn't cook the bacon all the way but… hopefully he get better soon so we can start walking. It's 12:00 now and we decided to start walking even though Charles is sick. We made it to where the Platte River divides. The …show more content…
One wagon goes at a time and we wait for 45 minutes for them to get ahead. Its our turn to cross the river. James and Gabe are in the front pulling the oxen while i'm on the side keeping the wagon straight. Gace is sitting on the oxen because we don't want her to fall in the river. We finally make it across the river and we run into a steep hill we must climb. It looks about 100 degrees which is very steep. We have to dump our trunk becuase it was too heavy to carry up the hill and it would make the wagon move too fast down the hill. We took everything out of it and put the stuff in empty bins and buckets we had until we can find a new place to put it. While were walking up the hill, rocks are falling down getting underneath the wheels and causing them to not move. We had to walk slow because the move movement caused stuff to fall down. The wagon was very shaky the whole time going up and some stuff fell off the wagon. Its was hard to walk up becuase we have to hold the wonon up and keep the oxen moving and in line. Going down the hill was very difficult because all your weight in the wagon is getting pushed forward and the wagon moves fast which cause the oxen to

Later that night the tide rose and the waves were getting bigger and the men were rowing as hard as they possibly could, the water was cold and some of the men died that night from hypothermia and hunger. The next day the waters calmed and the Brigade along with Pierre arrived at Grand Portage, without a doubt Pierre knew he was going to make it. When they boarded the Port, they went to the market and traded all day with the merchants, and when they had everything they needed to get back it was already night, so they decided to stay the night and set up camp. Finally, Pierre and the rest of the brigade had a feast and with all the sores in Pierre’s body he was surprised to see that the men in the brigade had enough energy to fight and hike a 20-mile mountain if they wanted to. When it was time to eat, Pierre thought of how much his father would be proud of him for doing such a treacherous…

We were all miffed and were of the opinion that now the American Army was showing its true face. Since the war was over and the Americans had their soldiers back from German captivity, we felt that perhaps we were now being punished for the concentration camps. To a large extent, however, the food shortage was offset by the actions of Captain [Robert L.] Everett and the professional culinary skills of our own cooks. According to rumor, Capt. Everett had connections with Army kitchen personnel and was able bring more food into the stockade than was authorized.…

Nowadays when we hear the word “Border”, with everything going on politically speaking the majority of us are indoctrinated to think of the U.S.-Mexico Border. A great amount of people think of the idea of the now famous wall to be built under our new president’s enforcement of it. From speaking with my group members, the topic of the border struck close to home for most of us. Personally there are a few words that pop up instantly when the word border is said, demarcation, stereotypes, parents, “coyote”, deadly, and overall sadness. When people were crossing the border back then and had to be sent to showers, had to have certain vaccines, and were practically dehumanized and stripped from their identity it was the beginning of some label constructs of all Mexicans.…

Recently there has been a lot of talk about illegal immigration in the United States. I think it is important for people to understand why these people from other countries choose to come here. To better understand the reason behind people coming here illegally, we first need to know why people in general wants to come here. The simple answer for that would be because they want to live better and safer life. To get it started, I will share my experiences and expectations of the America before I arrived here.…

In the book of Matthew 15:13-16, Jesus discusses the notion of being a city on a hill. In Winthrop 's speech he tells his shipmates that they will to be a “city on a hill”. Many major politicians have referenced the “city on a hill” speech such a former presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan. Kennedy’s speech and Reagan’s farewell address use Winthrop’s “City upon a Hill” speech differently. Kennedy uses the speech in a positive way because he is about to enter the office for his presidency and therefore he doesn’t know how the whole “city on a hill” idea works with America, this is just his prediction for when he starts his term.…
