The horror in California began on Friday, December 20, 1968 in the city of Vallejo when sixteen-year-old Betty Lou Jensen and seventeen-year-old David Faraday were killed while out on a date. According to Haugen (2011), they had driven to a remote lover’s lane on Lake Herman Road. While they were parked, a vehicle stopped nearby and the driver got out, shot out the rear passenger window of David Faraday’s station wagon, and then shot the left rear tire. The man proceeded to shoot Faraday behind the left ear, while Betty Lou Jensen was running for the road. When Stine stopped the cab as directed, the man shot and killed him. He then wiped his fingerprints off the cab, and cut off Stine’s bloody shirt collar. Some youngsters thought the cab looked suspicious and called the police, but by the time the police arrived, the man had walked away from the scene. Initially the alert that was broadcast on the police radio was for a black male suspect, but that later turned out to be incorrect. Ironically, two police officers in a cruiser stopped a heavyset white male, dressed in dark clothes, and asked if he had seen anything unusual. He replied he had seen a man running with a gun. Unfortunately, the man they spoke with may have been the Zodiac, as no other suspect was ever located. Three days later the San Francisco Chronicle received a letter, and inside was a piece of Paul Stine’s bloody shirt. In less than a year, the man known as the Zodiac had killed five people and severely injured two. The hunt was on!The Zodiac is also thought to have been responsible for the March 22, 1970 abduction of Kathy Johns, and her 10-month-old daughter, who lived in Modesto, California. A man in a light tan car pulled up beside Johns’ car and indicated she had a problem with a rear wheel. Johns pulled over and the man used a lug wrench to allegedly tighten the lug nuts for her. As she traveled on, the car didn’t feel right and eventually the right rear wheel came off. The man stopped again and offered her a ride. She didn’t want to accept, be since she was stranded, and he was nicely dressed, she did. After she and the baby got in the car, the man told her she was going to die, so she looked for an escape. One came when the man was forced to stop his car, and Johns jumped out with her baby and ran and hid until another motorist found her
