Oculus Intro
Oculus was first introduced to the virtual reality gaming market in 2012, when gamers could only dream of what it would be like to play quality virtual reality video games. At the time, the concept of virtual reality gaming existed however all previous attempts to create a quality headset to support the games were major flops. Benefits that appeal to not only gamers, but to our society as well. According to author, Jim Forsell (2003) virtual reality is being used to help train medical students as they “interview virtual patients, diagnose their condition, and recommend treatment” (Virtual Reality, para 26). Virtual reality has helped “burn victims cope with their pain during wound-dressing changes” (Virtual Reality, para 26). In the armed forces, “pilots are trained in complex virtual aircraft” (Virtual Reality, para 27). Virtual reality has also helped therapeutic patients get rid of phobias while not being directly in contact with them such as soldiers with PTSD or people anxiety disorders (Beidel, Bulik & Stanley, 2013, p. 155). Overall, none of the uses virtual reality has would be as advanced or reliable as it is today without the creation of Oculus.
Marketing Tactics As far as marketing tactics go, the Oculus Rift highly focuses on product features. Much like what happened with the iPhone, the Oculus Rift has unique features that can change how we run our everyday lives. Because the Rift is something so different, it really influences the behavior of the consumers. Currently, consumers do not care so much about the price they must pay. Instead, consumers are motivated by the fact that there is something new on the market that will offer something they have never experienced before, something that a controller and a TV screen cannot provide.
