Do you remember in school when you were sitting in math class and you were wondering to yourself, “when am i ever going to use this stuff in life”? Well here is your answer. You need math in most of the higher level jobs that you could get into. Especially in Pharmaceutical Science. A Pharmaceutical Scientist is a career that focuses on the way medicines will interact with the organism taking it. Most pharmaceutical scientist spend their days in a laboratory testing these interactions. To become one of these scientist, you must be educated in several areas of science and math. Yes, I said math, but specifically calculus.

Some wonder what exactly a pharmaceutical scientist is. They are scientists that specifically deal with the design,

Many wonder what they use it for, and this is how they do it, “when analyzing how medications affect different bodily functions, pharmaceutical scientists rely on calculus to track and predict changes in body chemistry. Before beginning a drug trial, for instance, scientists must use mathematical formulas and biological research to prove that a new medication could effectively treat certain ailments. During the experiment, scientists would compare their calculus-based predictions with results from tests subjects”(Careers That Use Calculus: Job Descriptions and Requirements, 2015). In order to create new drugs and to try to advance the medical world, pharmaceutical scientists have to use calculus functions to track things like half-lives, how fast or slow the medicine takes into effect, and even how your body functions react to the medication after you have taken it. One of the most important times that a pharmaceutical scientist will use calculus is when they need to measure the metabolism of a person in order to figure out the dosage of a medication they will need, how often you could take the medication, and how many times a day you could take the medication before it becomes harmful to a person's body (Uncategorized). This is important because someone who is six feet tall and weighs two-hundred pounds will be able to take a much higher dosage of the same medicine than someone who is five feet tall and only weighs one-hundred pounds. Calculus definitely plays a key role in the safety of

When a scientist develops a new drug and believes it is ready for people to try, he or she has to go through a process with the FDA to get the drug approved and ready to make it into a person 's everyday life. Most people do not know the process of how a drug goes from chemicals, or any of the substances placed in a medication, to the pill, IV, nose spray, etc. that a patient has in his or her hand. The FDA has a long process that a drug has to go through before that patient can hold it. After a scientist come ups with the makeup of the drug, he or she has to do laboratory tests to check for side effects.…

For example, more advanced concepts are needed when trying to find out how often the patient needs to take their medicine. When thinking about how often to administer a dose, it helps to understand the concept half life. The half life of a drug being absorbed in the body is the time needed so that one has 50 percent of what was administered. Half life can be graphed as exponential decay. This is useful because when one knows what the rate of the half life is, one can calculate when the medicine needs to be taken.…
