Calcified drusen have a shiny appearance. All of the other types of drusen can have calcification also, but calcified hard drusen are known to stand out the most. It is unclear how much drusen effects the development of macular degeneration. In some cases, there can be a little amount of drusen with a greater amount of visual damage, or there is a lot of drusen present and the vision may not be that bad. Drusen are infamous for being inconsistant. (Kanski, 1992). Non-exudative (dry) is by far the most common type of age-related macular degeneration. Typically it causes a mild to moderate impairment of vision over several months or years. Non-exudative AMD is either a result of a progressive and slow break down of the retinal pigment epithelium
