The story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a very interesting story. Similarly, the play is also very interesting. Both of these works of literature are different and similar in many areas. The plot, conflict, characters, theme, and setting are both quite alike. However, they are also very different in some ways. To start with, the plot of both the play and the book are very similar. Specifically, both the play and the book are almost the same throughout. The play and the story both have the plot of Jim Smiley and his gambling heroics. Moreover, both of these works of literature include the same showdown between Smiley and the Stranger. On the other hand, they have their differences. The play did not have the same exposition as the book. The play jumps straight into the adventures of Jim Smiley. In contrast, the book starts out with an unknown narrator going to find a man to inquire about a certain Leonidas Smiley, on the behalf of a friend. Likewise, the …show more content…
Both the play and the book, for the most part, take place in a land called Calaveras County, in the same time period, and have the same social aspects. But even so, there is one difference between the play and the book. In the book, Calaveras County is a place inside the story inside the story, while in the play, it is the only place mentioned. The book starts in an unknown setting and time period. It then changes the setting to that of a barroom. This particular barroom also appears at the end of the story. The variation of setting in the book makes that story more interesting than the play. However, it also means that the reader has less time to be drawn into the setting and live it. As was previously stated, the setting of the story is nearly identical to that of the play, with a few minor differences here and there to separate the two of
