Pain: Differences Between Humans And Animals

Superior Essays
First, animals do suffer and feel pain. Humans do have a moral compass when it comes to their beloved pets, especially cats and dogs. These special animals are put on pedestals, unlike any others. Pets are definitely animals that can suffer and feel pain. There are laws in place to halt cruelty to such animals, but this is where the line is drawn. Animal below said pedestal are in danger of being exploited by the highly dangerous humans. It is ridiculous to say these animals because they cannot speak the human language cannot feel pain. Animals that cannot say they are pain, obviously are not in pain. In the article “Philosophy and Animal Studies: Calarco, Castricano, and Diamond” writer Elisa Aaltola acknowledges that “The suffering …show more content…
The biological similarities are astounding. Both, humans and animals have central nervous systems and many of the same internal organs. For instance, chimpanzees are very similar to humans and some of these special animals have the ability to speak to humans with the use of sign language. Although, these are the only animals viewed as honorary humans. Furthermore, when humans are in pain do they always choose language to relay the message, the answer is definitely not. Pain can be so excruciating that facial expressions, thrashing around, or screaming incoherently are the methods to express human pain. If an average person were to study non-humans at a great length; it would not take long before one could understand what animals were say with body language. In Animal Liberation writer Peter Singer acknowledges this by saying, “Those who have studied the behavior of other animals soon learn to understand their responses at least as well as we understand those of an infant.” For example, how a mother understand her infant child, who by the way does not have the ability to speak. Animals not being able to express pain with a language is just an excuse to kill …show more content…
Animals have been a source of food for humans since the beginning of time. For instance, at one time humans had to hunt to survive, but they have graduated to the cruelty practice of factory farming. Scientist are creating ways to grow animals abnormally faster and bigger, by pumping them full of growth hormones and antibiotics. At times, animals grow so fast they cannot even support their own weight. In addition to this, farmers rob these animals of the right to turn around in their cages. These conditions are appalling. Most people against factory farming would agree that killing animals is fine as long as it is done humanly. In an article titled “The Carnivore’s Ethics,” writer Dominque Lestel states that “Killing an animal to feed oneself is acceptable, provided that the means of killing entails the least possible suffering for the animal.” These commiserating individuals are a far cry from being animal

The meat industry is able to provide cheap and affordable meat to the consumers, that are unaware of the animal cruelty and environmental impact of the meat being purchased. Animals of the factory farms are by far the most disadvantaged. The animals of the factory farms are often treated harshly and have their bodies mutilated to prevent the animals from harming other animals, or to create room to fit the animal in their designated cage. Author Matthew Scully states, “With no laws to stop it, moral concern surrendered entirely to economic calculation, leaving no limit to the punishments that factory farmers could inflict to keep costs down and profits up”. No longer are animals cared for. No longer do animals have to opportunity to run, or play, or live a healthy life. Factory farmed animals are confined to steel cages, often overcrowded with many roommates. Like crops in a field, they are “grown”.…

Primate Communication Human beings are primates, as are monkeys, and great apes. Observing our nonhuman primates it wouldn't take long before one would notice the behaviors of the nonhuman primate as being very similar to a human's behavior. A person may observe similar facial expressions, physical movements, or interactions with another nonhuman primate that could strengthen a person's confidence in knowing there has to be a connection in evolutionary history between the nonhuman primates and humans. Ape-like gestures can often look very human to us at a very basic level such as shaking the head to indicate "no" or begging for food with an open hand. Although a nonhuman primate will not execute an actual complex language such as English…

Many people don’t realize how badly animals are treated on factory farms. They also have this idea that animals are treated “humanely” on certain factory farms. Animals are not treated humanely on factory farms in any way because no matter what factory farm they get sent to, they are abused, neglected, and forced to live unnatural and unhealthy lives. Animals on factory farms are abused in so many different ways. For instance, cows are dragged by their legs using machines and hit with hard objects to get them in trailers and pens.…

An essential ingredient to improving animal welfare and human health is to farm slower and smaller. The World Animal Protection and the Farm Animal Initiative have developed a project called the Model Farm Project in effort to promote humane farming internationally. The WAP link, “Farm Animal Welfare,” argues that humane farming is both profitable and sustainable. The WAP asserts that keeping farms moderately sized creates jobs, reduces pollution and environmental damage (and expensive clean up efforts), and raises profits because healthy animals are less costly to maintain. In terms of animal welfare, the key is allowing animals to behave and eat as normally as possible.…

The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines human pain as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage (Loeser, 2008). It is a complex sensory experience that can even be modifiable without the use of a physical harm. While in contrast, there isn’t an animal-based definition of animal pain. A commonly used definition for animals is ‘ an aversive sensory experience caused by actual or potential injury that elicits protective and vegetative reactions, results in learned behaviour, and may modify species specific behaviour’ (Sneddon et al., 2014). In humans, an adult person may be able to verbally express the distress caused by a painful situation.…

Many people think eating meat is wrong, but people should eat meat. People should eat meat because eating meat is a way of life. Since the beginning of time, our species would eat meat for nutrients. The world we live in has a recent trend of eating plants that produce the same sort of nutrients that meat normally provides. One of the reasons people choose to become vegetarians is the notion that people expose animals to “enslavement or exploitation…”…

Veganism is a polarizing subject. When someone announces that they live a vegan lifestyle, the typical response this proclamation elicits is full of shock, disdain, and criticism. There are a lot of misconceptions about what veganism is and a multitude of reasons for converting to the lifestyle. The vast majority of the population is unfamiliar with the vegan lifestyle and therefore unaware of the benefits that it can provide. If more people adopted a vegan lifestyle, the individual as well as the population and the environment would benefit because a vegan lifestyle provides numerous health benefits, is more sustainable for the environment as well as the human population, and is ethically sound.…

Ethics is defined as Rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad. I believe it is unethical for humans to cause pain to animals unless strictly for consumption or vital purposes. I believe it is morally right for animals to have a certain level of protection against animal cruelty. People argue that animals do not have the autonomy that human beings have and there for should not be provided rights. Such people believe that animals were only placed on Earth strictly for human use, that they cannot be rational or experience emotions, and lack autonomy.…

    Non Human Animals Essay

    • 1398 Words

The issue with the topic about ‘pain in animals’ arises because the non-human animals cannot report their problems in terms of language, so the seriousness and the suffering cannot be equated with human (or individual’s) pain without any scientific method to give correlation between both kinds of pain. We cannot deny that animals do express/emote when they are in pain or danger in some way or the other, but that’s the only way we can figure out if an animal is experiencing pain. Vertebrates such as dogs, cats, alligators etc nurse their wounds, make sounds when they experience distress and tend to avoid situations which can be pain-inducing. There is also a good case that invertebrates also feel some amount of pain. We cannot measure the amount of pain that an animal goes through but we do know that there is at least some harm caused to an animal when they are being utilized as commodities and not as living beings by humans.…
