TBLT Narrative
The CALL tools used on the first day of the TBLT unit are the classroom computer, projector and screen. The map of Italy is shown to the students on the classroom screen so that everybody can direct their attention to the same image. Students will have to get up, move around the classroom, and ask each other questions about the regions on the map in the target language and by using the verb “essere” and the vocabulary about location. The projected map on the screen works better than a printed map in the book because it allows the students to get up and move freely by having a big image in front of them. The call tool used in the second lesson is YouTube. In the video an Italian speaker walks around the city of Bergamo and lists

Part B: During the children’s early years, they learn that mathematics helps people making sense of their environments through play, investigations, real-life situations, and focused learning experiences. Children come to school with different experiences about mathematics (Anghileri, 2006; Yelland, Butler, & Diezmann, 1999). Many children enjoy singing number names, identifying how big objects and people are, labelling shapes, and using their developing mathematical understandings to think and reason (Reys, Lindquist, Lambdin, Smith, Rogers, Falle, Frid, & Bennett, 2012; Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, 1997). In the education system there is a framework describing the children’s mathematical development and expected levels…

On my trip to Lucy T. Davis Elementary school, I had the pleasure of going into Ms. Sandra Philips 3rd grade math class and observe how they worked with technology. Sandra Phillips was a 4-year science and math teacher at Lucy T. Davis Elementary School but had been teaching since 1995. Mrs. Phillips told me how the school had just switched over to something called HP classroom manager. This allowed her to see the students’ progress from her desk. She really liked this because she could still do work from her desk like grading papers or even typing lesson plan well still being able to look and see their progress.…

This paper evaluates the curriculum initiative of Direct Interactive Instruction (DII) and its effectiveness in attaining higher scores on state level assessments in math and English. Clement Middle School took on this challenge in hindsight of the No Child Left Behind Initiative in which closing the gap in levels of student performance was seen as the ultimate tool in combating successful academic outcomes. “Educators are always called to consider something new, something that enables students to participate completely in an evolving world dynamic” (Ornstein & Hunkins, 2013, p. 231). The enactment of DII involved a curriculum design, development, and implementation stage to ensure it was well executed.…

Focus student one showed a 70% accuracy when asked to identify and sort pictures of objects into conceptual categories, a 59% accuracy when asked to identify and match all upper and lower case letter with prompting, and a 75% accuracy when asked to retell the main ideas or important facts from a read aloud. Based on these scores, I plan to raise the accuracy percentage goal for identifying and sorting colors, maintain the percentage accuracy goal for identifying upper and lower case letters, and raise the accuracy percentage goal for retelling main ideas or important facts. In terms of learning goals, the focus student has a bilateral hearing loss, therefore his learning goal will be to use self-advocating skills to ask for help or repetition of a question. The areas of growth that will be focused on for the sequence of lessons are organization of objects into categories, letter identification, and sequencing.…

Aimee, you brought something to my attention that I did not even consider, when reading Chapter 4 and after completing the quizzes. I agree that depending on the age of the students, the grade level, and the stage in which students are at mentally, does in fact play a huge role in determining which emerging philosophy of teaching a teacher should use when teaching students. As you mentioned, as a Kindergarten teacher, it is most appropriate to use the Behaviorism philosophy of teaching. I totally agree because those students are just starting out in the education system and they will need more structure. At that stage, they are just learning the dos and donts in school.…

Math is an important skill for all students to learn, because it is used in everyday life. We use math everywhere like when in school, at grocery stores, when planning parties, and when buying items. Strengthening the student toolbox by Dunlosky describes multiple strategies that students can use to learn certain amounts of information that the students have to know in a class and in turn strategies on how teachers can teach their students. These strategies were as follows for students and teachers being the good; practice testing, disturbed practice, interleaved practice, elaborative interrogation, self-explanation, and the bad; rereading, highlighting, summarization, keyword mnemonic and imagery for text. All of these strategies are and can be used by students and helped or hindered along by their teachers, some more than others. In my high school years I received multiple instructions to not cram study for a test and to space out studying for it in the days leading up to the test.…

It is my opinion that various people who necessarily have never been in a classroom setting or did not have an educational background have impacted curriculum design models across the country. As an educator, I have the first hand experience and understand the learning process and development of children whereas the majority of board members and decisions makers do not and due to this aspect, mandates are being passed down and curriculum are designed without this thought process and how their decisions will impact the children and their learning. Looking towards the future, many educators like myself are hoping that there will be significant changes being made when it comes to the design and the development of the curriculum being utilized in schools. In the past, the curriculum was centered on subject areas and it still is but looking forward…
