In the beginning of the poem, Bradstreet is sleeping during a calm and quiet night, and then suddenly, she wakes up by “thund’ring noise / And piteous shrieks of dreadful voice” (lines 3-4). She then sees that her house is burning in fire. Terrified, she cries out to God and prays so that God would help her. Her house eventually got entirely burned up, and Bradstreet ended up homeless, but she did not lose hope. She began to pull herself together and realized that God took away something that didn’t belong to her anyway.…
Settlers received 160 acres of free land in Chase county in the 1862 Homestead Act. The land was free for the taking as long as it was not already claimed PrairyErth. By 1870, with most of the bottom land claimed, the railroad companies started to move into Kansas. Land grants given to the Santa Fe and the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroads took up nearly 38 percent…
There are in total two poems in Slant Six I used as models to write this poem. The first one is “Someone asks, what makes this poem American?’ and it inspires me to find connections among daily things. Specifically, Erin draws the conclusion that “American is anywhere” at the first time by discussing about where the “normal” American food comes from and different customs behind these American food and how American society contributes to the combination of different cultures. Once Erin draw the conclusion that Americanness is everywhere, she works on verifying her conclusion by both describing a normal American mini-marts, Bill’s, and using examples to convince people have opposite ideas.…
Herbert Hoover was known as the Great Humanitarian and the Great Engineer. Yet, he was blamed almost entirely for the Great Depression. Herbert Hoover accomplished much in his life, but it was definitely not an easy journey; he went through the ups and downs of the learning years that paved the path leading to his presidency, and he ultimately faced his fears. For the first nine years of his life, he lived in the small town.…
USC’s purchase of Verdugo Hills Hospital Located in the heart of Los Angeles in Southern California lies the home of the USC Trojans. Since then they have blossomed into a nationally known institution and have graduated hundreds of thousands of students who have gone on to make a huge impact in not only the United States but all over the world.…
Cavafy’s poem makes me think of college, specifically in terms of how I should, we should, be grateful that we are here. It is a privilege to attend college, a privilege to further our education. It is not easy, but getting here, being accepted here, is an achievement in itself, “a glorious thing” to quote Cavafy. This is a step on the ladder of education. It may not seem, when stepping back and looking at it all, like it is a great feat or triumph to have been accepted here, but by directing my focus to the here and now, I can see that I am incredibly fortunate and extremely privileged to be at this university.…

In 1862, settlers could buy 160 acres of land for $1.25 an acre. With this new land, Saw mills would buy as much land as they could and log it for a huge profit. By 1875 logging white pines was the main source for the economy in the northern part of the country. " In 1875, you could ship 141 rail cars full of lumber in one week with a fast moving team"(Mimi). Soon after all the wood was cut around the town of Minneapolis, it became one of the biggest boom towns in the Midwest.…
This they did on May 20, 1862. Families qualified for land if they payed a small amount and lived on their allotted land for 5 years. Or, they could obtain the land by paying only $1.25 per acre. Almost everything we do is related to our own good. Living things, like us, no matter where we come from, or where we develop, try to survive one way or another. It is the one part of our nature we cannot change. Survival requires selfishness, but also intelligence, that does not make it wrong. In certain situations, like the ones we read in the articles, it’s better to think about yourself, trust your instincts and take full advantage of your abilities, than to hesitate worrying about someone else’s well-being and end in a catastrophe.…
INTRODUCTION The world’s many dystopian debacles including, poverty, war and capitalism are commonly disputed though the effective manipulation of protest songs. Cambridge Dictionary defines protest song as a song that expresses disapproval, typically regarding politics. Song-writers have manipulated stylised literacy conventions since the 1960s to empower mass populations, return voice to those who have been marginalised, influence people’s cultural perspectives and widen social ideologies. The songs “White Fella Black Fella” (1985) by Warumpi Band and “I Am Austrlian” (1987) by The Seekers both contain the literacy techniques of: meaning, imagery, language, tone, and style which have been effectively mastered to clearly convey their parallel protest messages.…
